Steam Enhances Game Performance Tools with More Insights

Steam upgrades performance monitoring tools with new analysis options

Valve has continually updated its Steam client over the years, with significant enhancements rolling out to the PC store and platform focusing on different features. The latest area receiving attention is the widely used performance monitor included in the Steam overlay. While the existing version displays only a figure in a small section to indicate the current frame rate of the game being played, the update offers much more comprehensive information to users.

Now accessible through the Steam Beta client, the performance monitor provides various detail levels to select from. Options include FPS Single Value (the original format), FPS Detail & Graph, FPS Detail CPU & GPU Utilization, and the extensive FPS Detail & Graph, CPU, GPU, & RAM Details settings. As anticipated, each option includes progressively more data displayed on the overlay.

Users can also modify screen position, contrast and saturation, and background opacity from the same overlay settings page. The image above illustrates the highest detail option available, presenting everything from generated frames to useful graphs and VRAM details while gaming.

Valve mentioned that certain features in this initial beta version will only be available on Windows systems for the time being. The company further stated, "Much of it will apply to other supported operating systems, and while some metrics aren't available on different operating systems, we plan to add more support later."

Valve has also set up a useful FAQ explaining the meaning of each setting and outlining what issues players can troubleshoot, such as micro stutter or bottlenecks, with these overlay additions.

To test the new feature before it is released to all users, you can switch to the Steam Beta Client by navigating to the app's Settings > Interface section and selecting the latest version in the Client Beta Participation dropdown. After that, to activate the new performance monitor, head to Settings > In Game section and select your desired detail level.
