AMD shifts to AI-powered FSR 4 for enhanced visuals and efficiency
AMD has introduced FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), a new technology that utilizes AI to enhance visual quality and gaming performance. FSR 4 aims to improve graphics and gameplay smoothness on less powerful hardware through advanced AI techniques. This technology signals AMD's move towards more efficient, AI-driven upscaling, similar to NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS, which have been employing AI for a number of years.
During discussions with Tom's Hardware about handheld gaming and battery life, Jack Huynh revealed that FSR is undergoing a significant transformation. While FSR2 and FSR3 were previously developed using analytical methods, AMD has now shifted its approach to focus on AI-based frame creation and interpolation. This change is geared towards maximizing efficiency and improving battery life, indicating a strong emphasis on handheld gaming devices.
Even though Huynh emphasized the benefits of FSR4 for the handheld market, it does not necessarily mean that it will be restricted to that type of device. Given AMD's history of supporting a wide range of GPU options, FSR4 may have broader applications. Notably, AMD's GPUs from the last six years are compatible with FP16 and DP4a (INT8) instructions, aligning with the transition to AI-based solutions.

The use of AI in AMD's FSR 4 technology is expected to resemble the Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) used in the PlayStation 5 Pro, a technology that enhances image quality without sacrificing performance. This integration demonstrates AMD's move towards AI as a key feature in its future graphics architecture.
AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 GPUs will be the first to fully support FSR 4, representing a significant advancement for the company in the AI-driven gaming space. While there are uncertainties surrounding the release timeline for FSR4, AMD's recent upgrade to Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2) technology indicates a short-term solution for improving frame creation on portable gaming devices.
