Switch 2 Faces Early Hacking Attempts After Launch
Nintendo introduced its Switch 2 console just a few days ago, and already, hackers have discovered a way to exploit the device. A user named @retr0.id on Bluesky has showcased a userland ROP (Return-Oriented Programming) exploit that allows for a framebuffer graphics demonstration. Although this is not a complete hack of the system, it clearly indicates that Nintendo’s latest console is not resistant to hacking attempts.
This exploit does not permit users to play modified or pirated games on their consoles or run unauthorized applications. It represents a basic exploit rather than a full-fledged hack that enables the execution of native code. Still, it presents a potential starting point for hackers and suggests that Nintendo may need to strengthen the security measures of its Switch 2 hardware.

The exploit demonstrated by @retr0.id functions as a userland Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) exploit. This type of exploit operates at the user level, above the Switch 2’s operating system and applications. It does not grant root or administrator access to the machine. Below, one can observe this exploit being utilized to showcase some unique checkerboard graphics.
Currently, this exploit related to the Nintendo Switch 2 lacks any practical applications. However, it serves as an initial indication that the Switch 2 is susceptible to hacking. If hackers continue to unveil such exploits, it won't be long before they can penetrate the system’s security at a more profound level, potentially gaining admin or root access. Once that occurs, hackers could leverage their Switch 2 consoles to run customized homebrew applications. Moreover, they might manipulate the system’s hardware to function at increased speeds. After all, the original Switch boasted an overclocking community due to similar hacks.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has already achieved notable success in its initial days. Several retailers have reported unprecedented pre-order numbers, making it challenging for many to acquire a unit in the first wave. Regardless, the original Nintendo Switch continues to deliver what fans love—versatile gaming choices, a broad game library, and timeless titles that always captivate.
