AMD makes its fastest gaming CPU even faster with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D
AMD at CES 2026 just officially unveiled its new processor, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This is a "minor but worthwhile" upgrade for gamers looking to squeeze a few more FPS from AMD's eight-core Zen 5 CPU.
The new AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D further extends the already superior advantage of the 9800X3D by pushing the Zen 5 boost clock up to 5.6 GHz, while maintaining 96MB of 3D V-Cache and a 120W TDP. As a result, this chip delivers a noticeable FPS increase in 1080p games.

According to benchmarks released by AMD itself, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D can be up to 27% faster than the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K in 35 games, thus confirming its position as a premium, esports-focused upgrade for gamers who prioritize CPU performance and high FPS. In short, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is essentially the 9800X3D with a higher clock speed, resulting in clearly superior performance, especially in Full-HD games. Comparison slides released by AMD show that this chip creates a significant gap compared to Intel's current flagship, the Core Ultra 9 285K.

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D features 8 cores, 16 threads, utilizing AMD's fastest Zen 5 cores with a boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz (compared to 5.1 GHz on the 9800X3D). Aside from the higher clock speed, the overall configuration retains the elements that made its predecessor powerful.
The 96 MB L3 cache capacity is maintained, along with a 120 W TDP, similar to the 9800X3D. This indicates that the 9850X3D is essentially a minor refinement, offering better performance, aimed at demanding gamers and those looking for a worthwhile upgrade.
It is expected that the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D will be sold at a higher price than its competitor, even more expensive than the 9800X3D.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is already a well-established X3D powerhouse, delivering excellent frame rates and remarkable efficiency at present. So if you’re currently building a gaming PC and searching for an outstanding processor to pair with a powerful GPU, just opt for the 9800X3D. You won’t be let down.
