Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition debuts as AMD’s latest high-end CPU

AMD unveils flagship Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition high-performance CPU

AMD has officially unveiled a new addition to its Ryzen 9000 X3D lineup: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition. Despite its unusual name, the chip stands out as the first CPU to feature a dual 3D V-Cache configuration. Unlike earlier Ryzen X3D models, which placed stacked cache on just one CCD, this processor includes vertically stacked cache on both core complexes.

In terms of specs, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 comes with 16 cores and 32 threads, a base clock of 4.3 GHz, and a boost clock of 5.6 GHz. The boost speed is slightly lower - by 100 MHz - than the standard 9950X3D, likely due to the additional power demands of the second cache layer. That added complexity also pushes the TDP up to 200W, making it one of the most power-hungry chips in the Ryzen 9000 series.

The highlight here is the massive cache capacity. The CPU offers a total of 208MB of combined cache, including 192MB of L3. Each CCD carries 64MB of 3D V-Cache along with 32MB of on-die cache, contributing to the overall pool. When L2 cache is included, the total reaches that 208MB figure.

This processor uses AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache design, which improves thermal efficiency compared to the first generation. Even so, with its 200W power draw and stacked cache on both CCDs, cooling this chip could be a challenge. AMD has also included a small 2-core Radeon GPU for basic display output and troubleshooting.

AMD didn’t provide gaming benchmarks during the announcement, but it did share productivity gains of around 5–7% over the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. As always, independent testing will be needed to confirm these claims once reviews go live.

While pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, AMD confirmed that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 will be available starting April 22. The chip had already appeared in a recent ASRock leak, though its launch timing seems to have shifted slightly. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the current gaming favorite, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

For gamers building a PC today, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D continues to be an outstanding option, offering excellent frame rates and impressive efficiency. It’s a proven X3D performer that pairs exceptionally well with high-end GPUs. Be sure to use our price comparison tool to find the best deals on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D available today.
