Next-gen Xbox Project Helix revealed with support for Xbox & PC games

Asha Sharma, CEO of Microsoft Gaming (Xbox), has revealed Project Helix, the codename for Microsoft’s upcoming next-generation Xbox console. The company plans to share more detailed information about the system during GDC 2026.

One of the key details confirmed so far is that Project Helix will support both Xbox and PC games. This suggests that Microsoft’s next console could function as a hybrid between a traditional console and a PC. If that approach holds true, it may allow access to third-party PC storefronts such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. However, it remains possible that Microsoft could still require developers to distribute titles through its own Windows or Microsoft Store ecosystem.

Beyond that, few official details have been shared. A teaser posted on the official Xbox social media account simply featured an animated version of the Project Helix logo. Previously, former Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed that Microsoft is working closely with AMD to co-develop the hardware. 

Microsoft has stated that the Helix platform will “lead in performance,” suggesting a major leap forward in hardware capabilities. Rumored specifications point to an AMD Zen 6 processor paired with an RDNA 5 graphics architecture. Reports also suggest the system will include a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to handle AI-driven features.

The new Xbox is expected to launch next year, and Microsoft will likely use its GDC presentation to attract developer interest and encourage studios to begin building games for the platform. After a relatively quiet period for the brand, the announcement signals renewed momentum for Xbox hardware. Some observers even speculate that Microsoft could accelerate the generation cycle, similar to how the original Xbox era evolved rapidly toward its successor.

While Project Helix provides an early glimpse at the future of Xbox, the next generation is still some time away.
