Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti 8GB sees up to a 10% performance drop when running on PCIe 4.0
Critics have already dubbed Nvidia’s 8GB RTX 5060 Ti as “instantly obsolete,” but according to ComputerBase, the situation worsens with PCIe 4.0. Their tests reveal that the 1440p gaming performance of Nvidia’s 8GB RTX 5060 Ti is approximately 12% slower than its 16GB version when utilizing PCIe 5.0. With PCIe 4.0, the 8GB variant lags over 22% behind its 16GB counterpart.
ComputerBase’s evaluations indicate that PCIe bandwidth can greatly influence gaming performance when a graphics card is limited by VRAM. Nvidia’s 8GB RTX 5060 Ti lacks sufficient VRAM, compelling the GPU to depend on the system’s DRAM and the available PCIe bandwidth. This grants an advantage to PCIe 5.0 compatible systems, which can provide superior performance compared to PCIe 4.0 systems in VRAM-limited scenarios.
On average, so games, where 8 GB are sufficient and make no difference, are included as well. Our worst case: https://t.co/B6xSeJ9unX pic.twitter.com/s5wUcRjYHS

In an extreme example, ComputerBase highlighted how reduced PCIe bandwidth could severely impair game performance. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, switching from 5.0 to 4.0 speeds resulted in 1st percentile framerates plummeting from 24.6 to 3.3 FPS. It’s important to note that moving from a 16GB RTX 5060 Ti to an 8GB version already caused 1st percentile framerates to drop from 47.6 FPS to 24.6 FPS. These performance differences are substantial.
From this testing, it is clear that PCIe bandwidth is significant. However, it predominantly affects scenarios where graphics cards are VRAM-limited. When a GPU has enough VRAM, games won't need to depend on system memory and PCIe bandwidth to manage GPU tasks. This reinforces the idea that gamers should steer clear of 8GB GPUs in new builds, particularly for those using systems that do not support PCIe 5.0.
The RTX 5060 serves as an excellent entry-level option for gamers new to RTX, delivering respectable performance and modern features at an affordable price. Nevertheless, for those seeking to maximize settings to ultra, ensure their system is future-proof, and fully leverage the capabilities of cutting-edge gaming—there is no replacement for the RTX 5080.
