Valve low VRAM optimization boosts select games in 4GB GPU testing

Earlier in April 2026, Valve engineer Natalie Vlock revealed a new VRAM optimization for Linux aimed at improving performance on lower-memory GPUs. Instead of allowing background applications to push game data into slower system memory, this change ensures that the active game is prioritized whenever dedicated VRAM runs low.

The feature has now entered early testing on a 4GB graphics card, with initial results showing noticeable improvements in certain games. After the patch appeared, YouTuber NJ Tech tested it using a Radeon RX 6500 XT on CatchyOS, where the optimization can be enabled through the “Install GPU Boosters” option. The system used for testing included 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a Ryzen 5 5600X.

Looking at performance, Alan Wake II benefited the most. Running at 1080p on low settings with FSR set to Quality, average frame rates increased significantly from 14 FPS to 41 FPS, while 1% lows improved from 12 to 28 FPS.

Two other games also saw solid gains. Resident Evil: Requiem experienced a 16% boost in average FPS, rising from 67 to 78 FPS, with 1% lows climbing from 36 to 56 FPS under similar 1080p low settings with aggressive upscaling. Silent Hill f showed smaller improvements, with average FPS increasing from 47 to 50 and 1% lows ticking up slightly.

In contrast, several titles saw minimal or no change. Spider-Man 2 improved marginally from 60 to 62 FPS, Hogwarts Legacy went from 60 to 61 FPS, while Death Stranding 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Crimson Desert showed no measurable differences.

Although more testing is needed to fully assess its impact, the early results suggest that this optimization could help low-VRAM GPUs perform more consistently in certain scenarios.
