Valve’s Steam Frame headset faces long waits as backorders hit 2027
Valve has started providing shipping estimates for customers who reserved its Steam Frame VR headset, giving buyers a clearer idea of when they can expect to receive their hardware. Despite its premium price, demand has reportedly been strong enough to push availability into 2027, with some reservation holders now facing a wait of several months.
Customers can check their expected shipping window through Valve's reservation system, with estimates currently listed as either “by December” or sometime in 2027. Those who have not secured an earlier reservation will need to join the separate waitlist, which Valve will only begin processing after it fulfills reservations in the relevant region.
Receiving an order invitation also comes with a deadline. Once Valve sends the purchase email, customers have 72 hours to complete their order. Anyone who misses that window risks losing their place as Valve moves on to the next person in the queue.
Availability is organized by region, meaning reservation holders in one market may receive their invitations before customers elsewhere. Valve has emphasized that waitlist members will not jump ahead of people with existing reservations. The company also plans to notify those on the waitlist if additional purchasing opportunities become available, although new sign-ups will naturally be placed at the back of the line.
Alongside the shipping updates, Valve has published CAD models and electrical interface documentation for the Steam Frame through its GitLab account. The files are intended to help users modify the headset and develop compatible hardware. They are available for non-commercial use, while anyone hoping to sell accessories for the device is encouraged to contact Valve about establishing an official partnership.
The growing queue also highlights the challenges facing Valve's hardware ambitions. Memory and storage supply constraints, driven in part by demand from the AI industry, have put pressure on component availability and manufacturing costs across the electronics market. These conditions could help explain why devices such as the Steam Frame are expensive and difficult to produce in large quantities.
