During its panel at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED officially announced its renewed collaboration with Studio Trigger for a new standalone anime series set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
The second season will not continue the story of David Martinez. Instead, it introduces a completely new cast of characters navigating the unforgiving, neon-drenched streets of Night City in the middle of the never-ending conflict between greedy Corporations and violent Gangs.
Conceived as a standalone sequel, the upcoming season will delve into darker, more emotionally charged themes—chiefly redemption and revenge. Bartosz Sztybor, the head writer of the original series, returns as showrunner and has described the narrative as “sadder and bloodier” than before.
Taking over as director is Kai Ikarashi, who previously helmed Episode 6 of the first season, titled "Girl on Fire." The creative team also includes Kanno Ichigo (character design) and Masahiko Otsuka (screenplay adaptation), with animation once again handled by the acclaimed Studio Trigger in collaboration with CD Projekt RED. The new season will feature ten episodes, matching the original series' length, and will premiere exclusively on Netflix; however, a specific release date has not yet been announced.
A teaser was privately screened at Anime Expo 2025, hinting at a more raw, visceral direction. While fans won’t see returning characters like Lucy or Rebecca, the new season aims to expand the Cyberpunk world with fresh stories and characters that reflect the harsh realities of life in Night City.
The original Edgerunners played a major role in reviving interest in Cyberpunk 2077, and expectations are high that season 2 will deliver a similarly powerful emotional punch.
