Charting the Unknown Video Reveals Sailing, Romance and Castle Housing
Gameplay

Following the significant success of the game and its transition to Crimson Desert Enhanced from its original form, Pearl Abyss has released an official Features Overview video for Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown, the first DLC for its open-world action-adventure game. With the expansion set to launch on October 29 after an unexpected delay, the new footage offers a closer look at the adventures awaiting players in Pywel, from sailing across the Great Ocean to building relationships, managing businesses, and claiming castles.

The overview breaks the expansion into three main sections, highlighting new character storylines, ocean exploration, and additional ways to shape life in the game world. Here is a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of the video, along with the release details players should know before launch.

The Features Overview Video

The video is organized into three chapters, each focusing on a different part of the expansion:

  • The Journey Continues: New storylines follow Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane as their adventures continue beyond the main campaign.

  • Beyond the Shores: Sailing, ship customization, island exploration, and underwater discoveries expand the world beyond Pywel's familiar landscapes.

  • A Richer Life in Pywel: Romance, business management, expanded housing, and claimable castles offer new ways to interact with the world outside combat.

Together, these chapters present an expansion that goes beyond adding new adventures. Charting the Unknown also introduces more opportunities for exploration, personal relationships, and activities that let players make their mark on Pywel.

The Journey Continues: Three New Stories

Charting the Unknown introduces three new storylines, one for each of the main characters: Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane. Each character gets a new narrative thread, allowing players to continue following their individual journeys. According to Pearl Abyss, these storylines can be started through the Journal menu after completing the main story. Players who want to experience the new character-focused content should therefore finish the main campaign before diving into these additional adventures.

The expansion also introduces a separate ocean-focused storyline. This becomes available after completing the main-story quest "Howling Hill", tying the new narrative content to the expansion's maritime exploration. The result is a combination of post-campaign stories and a new route into the ocean content, giving returning players several reasons to continue their adventures after the main story concludes.

Beyond the Shores: Sailing and Diving

One of the biggest additions showcased in the overview is the ability to travel across the Great Ocean of Pywel. Charting the Unknown introduces shipbuilding, ship customization, and underwater exploration, extending the adventure beyond the mainland.

Players can build a ship using resources and their Greymane companions, or purchase one from a Fleet Office manager. Pearl Abyss explains that shipbuilding can be initiated by sending companions on a shipbuilding dispatch mission at a port. Access to the shipbuilding questline requires the Greymane Camp to be established at Howling Hill. Once players have unlocked the relevant questline, they can set sail across the ocean and explore islands beyond the coast. These islands are occupied by hostile forces, giving players new locations to clear alongside their Greymane allies.

Diving beneath the surface

The ocean is not limited to ship-based exploration. Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane can also dive underwater to discover sunken ruins, treasure chests, resources, and new creatures and mounts. Diving itself does not require a special unlock, but remaining underwater consumes breath. Diving suits and other suitable equipment can help players stay submerged longer, making preparation important when exploring deeper areas.

The overview emphasizes the variety of activities available across the water, from navigating the ocean to exploring submerged locations and discovering new rewards.

A Richer Life in Pywel: Romance, Business and Housing

The third chapter moves away from sailing and underwater exploration to focus on everyday life in Pywel. Charting the Unknown expands the ways players can interact with NPCs, develop their home base, and manage facilities across the world.

Romance and relationships

Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane can develop deeper relationships with certain inhabitants of Pywel. By interacting with these characters and building trust, players can progress toward romance and, eventually, marriage. These relationships can also affect life at the Greymane Camp. Once the camp reaches a certain upgrade level, friends with whom players have developed close bonds may visit and spend time there.

Managing businesses across Pywel

Players will also be able to rent and manage facilities, including a restaurant in Vellua and a smithy at Zargan Tankworks. The management system lets players oversee staff, goods, and business policies, adding an economic and organizational dimension to life in Pywel. Access to facilities depends on completing the relevant faction quest to liberate the region and establishing the Greymane Camp.

Build a home from the ground up

Charting the Unknown also introduces an upgraded housing system that lets players build their homes from the ground up. Instead of simply decorating a predefined space, players can customize structural elements, including walls, windows, and the layout. To access the upgraded housing system, players must establish their camp at Howling Hill and complete Luke's Request under the Greymanes faction quest "Grounds of the Sunrise."

The expansion also introduces three claimable castles. After completing the main story and the relevant quests, players can liberate the associated strongholds and unlock missions that allow them to claim the castles. Once claimed, the castles can be decorated with unique objects and furnishings, including customization options for their courtyards and interiors.

A new challenge for veteran players

The expansion's additional content is not limited to building, relationships, and management. Charting the Unknown also introduces the Garden of Trials, a combat-focused challenge in which players face previously encountered bosses one after another. It becomes available after clearing the main questline and offers special rewards for completing the challenge.

Release Date, Price and Pre-Order Bonuses

Charting the Unknown launches on October 29, 2026, following a two-week delay announced by Pearl Abyss on September 30. The developer said it needed additional development time to deliver a more polished and stable gameplay experience. The expansion is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.

Pre-order bonuses

Pre-orders are available through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Players who pre-order can receive two exclusive in-game diving outfit sets:

  • Charter's Diving Set: For Kliff and Oongka.

  • Charter's Light Diving Set: For Damiane.

Console players who already own Crimson Desert Enhanced can also qualify for a limited 10% pre-order discount on PlayStation and Xbox. Eligibility and the final price should be checked on the relevant platform's store. For further details, see Pearl Abyss's pre-order announcement.

What you need before launch

Charting the Unknown is a premium DLC that requires Crimson Desert Enhanced, the base game. The expansion's features also have individual progression requirements, so players hoping to access everything immediately should plan accordingly.

In particular, the new character storylines, claimable castles, and Garden of Trials require completion of the main story or relevant quests. Ocean-focused content and the shipbuilding questline have their own prerequisites tied to Howling Hill and the Greymane Camp, while the upgraded housing system requires completion of Luke's Request.

There are also two availability caveats. First, the expansion will not be available through the Mac App Store at launch. Second, Pearl Abyss has confirmed that the DLC will not be available in certain markets following a review of content and age-rating requirements. Players should check their local storefront for availability.
