Dungeon-crawling roguelite Moonlighter is free to claim on Steam now

PC gamers have a new free game to grab this weekend, and this time it's not coming from the Epic Games Store. Instead, Moonlighter, the well-loved action RPG and shop management sim from Digital Sun, is currently free to claim on Steam for a limited time.

Originally released in 2018, Moonlighter carved out a niche thanks to its clever mix of dungeon crawling and shopkeeping. You play as Will, a merchant by day and aspiring hero by night. Venture into dangerous dungeons to collect weapons, relics, and valuable loot before returning to the peaceful village of Rynoka to sell your discoveries.

Running the shop is much more than simply putting items on shelves. You'll set prices based on customer demand, hire assistants as your business grows, invest in upgrades, and slowly turn your humble store into a thriving business. The money you earn can then be poured back into better equipment, stronger enchantments, and supplies that help you tackle even tougher dungeons.

Outside of the shop, there's plenty to keep you busy. Explore multiple interconnected dungeons, craft new gear, befriend the townsfolk, and uncover mysterious worlds hidden behind magical gates. The satisfying loop of gathering loot, selling it for profit, and using those earnings to become stronger remains one of the game's biggest strengths.

The formula clearly resonated with players. Moonlighter currently holds a Very Positive rating on Steam, while review scores ranged from 74 to 88 across platforms at launch. Even years later, it's still widely recommended as one of the better indie action RPGs of its generation.

The giveaway isn't random, either. It's part of Digital Sun's celebration ahead of Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, which is scheduled to leave early access and launch in version 1.0 on September 2. The sequel expands on the original with fully 3D environments, more varied combat, deeper progression systems, and larger areas to explore, while keeping the addictive gameplay loop of adventuring for treasure and selling it back at your shop.

The Moonlighter giveaway is available on Steam until August 9, giving players just a couple of days to claim it before it returns to its regular $19.99 / €19.99 / £15.49 price. If you've never tried this unique blend of action RPG and business management, it's well worth adding to your library while it's free.
