Valve officially sunsets the Index as leftover headsets get price cuts
Valve is winding down production of its original Index VR headset, marking the end of an era as the company shifts its attention toward newer hardware, including the Steam Frame. First released in June 2019, the Index has spent more than seven years on the market, earning a reputation as a premium option for PC-based virtual reality.
Although production has ended, the headset isn't disappearing from stores immediately. Valve will continue selling its remaining stock of Index headsets, controllers, and accessories until supplies run out, with selected products now available at discounted prices.
The Valve Index headset is currently listed on Steam for $399.20 (around €343 / £295), down 20% from its original $499 (around €429 / £369) price. Valve has also discounted the replacement left controller and replacement tether by 20%, giving existing owners an opportunity to pick up spare parts for less before availability dries up.
When it launched in 2019, the Index stood out for its high-refresh-rate display, off-ear audio system, and finger-tracking controllers. These features helped establish it as one of the leading PC VR systems of its generation, particularly for enthusiasts who prioritized immersion and precise interaction over the convenience of standalone headsets.
The arrival of the Steam Frame signals Valve's next step in virtual reality, making the decision to retire the Index a natural progression for the company's hardware lineup. However, discontinuing production doesn't mean Valve is abandoning existing customers. The company has confirmed that support for current Index owners will continue through Steam and SteamVR, with no immediate changes planned. Owners can therefore keep using their headsets as usual, even as Valve gradually moves away from manufacturing the hardware.
For anyone considering an Index while discounted stock remains available, the lower price could make it an appealing entry point into PC VR. However, buyers should keep in mind that the headset is no longer being manufactured, meaning future availability will depend entirely on remaining inventory.
