Community Reacts to Battlefield 6’s New Class System
DICE has confirmed one of the most significant changes coming to Battlefield 6, and it's already stirring controversy within the community. In a departure from the franchise's traditional class system, the upcoming title will allow all player classes to equip any weapon, removing the long-standing restrictions that defined previous entries in the series.
A Shift Toward Player Freedom
According to the developer, this change is designed to give players more flexibility and tactical options on the battlefield. Previous installments limited weapon access based on roles such as Assault, Recon, Support, and Engineer, but Battlefield 6 aims to remove those barriers. While weapons will now be universally accessible, DICE has assured fans that class identity will not disappear entirely. Each role will retain unique gadgets, equipment, and passive perks to differentiate playstyles.
The announcement has sparked a heated discussion among fans. Advocates of the new system praise the added freedom, arguing that it allows squads to adapt more effectively to dynamic combat scenarios. However, critics worry that the move could lead to homogenized gameplay, where distinct class roles become irrelevant, echoing concerns raised with the controversial Specialist system in Battlefield 2042.
Some players fear the change could undermine the series' tactical depth, a core element that has long set Battlefield apart from its competitors. On forums and social media, many have voiced concerns that balance could suffer if too many players gravitate toward the same high-performing loadouts.
DICE has acknowledged the community’s concerns and confirmed that additional mechanics will help preserve role diversity. Exclusive class gadgets, role-specific bonuses, and passive abilities are expected to provide meaningful differences between classes, even with a shared weapon pool. The studio also plans to collect extensive feedback through Battlefield Labs testing phases before the game’s official release.
By removing traditional weapon restrictions, Battlefield 6 is making one of the boldest design shifts in the franchise’s history. We will have to wait to find out if this gamble reinvigorates the series or alienates long-time fans, which will mainly depend on how successfully DICE balances flexibility with class identity.
While an exact release date has not been confirmed, EA previously stated that the next Battlefield installment is planned for launch before March 2026, with industry speculation pointing toward a potential release in late 2025. DICE is expected to share more details, including beta testing opportunities, later this year.
