Valve's hidden unboxing video sparks rumors of a new Steam Controller

New Steam Controller unboxing video hints at imminent standalone release

It appears that Valve may be getting close to releasing its new Steam Controller. A recently discovered unboxing video uploaded to Steam hints that pre-orders - or even a full launch - could happen soon, despite the video not yet being publicly accessible.

The file was uncovered by VR leaker Brad Lynch on X, listed as “steam_controller_unboxing_2026” in the SteamDB. Although it showed up on April 20, the video itself can’t currently be played, displaying a message that it hasn’t been processed for streaming. This typically suggests the content has been uploaded internally but not officially published yet.

In terms of design, the new Steam Controller closely resembles the layout found on the Steam Deck. It includes dual thumbsticks, trackpads, a D-pad, and standard XYAB buttons, along with L1, R1, L2, and R2 triggers. There are also customizable back buttons and a “grip-enabled gyro” feature for additional control options.

Originally, Valve planned to release the controller alongside its upcoming Steam Machine. However, ongoing global RAM shortages have delayed both the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset. Aside from a February update explaining the delay, Valve hasn’t provided a clear timeline, even as April comes to a close.

Because of this, the company may be adjusting its strategy by launching the controller independently. Unlike the other hardware, the controller doesn’t rely on expensive memory components, making it easier to bring to market sooner. It could also serve as a new accessory for Steam Deck users while they wait for the rest of Valve’s hardware lineup.

There’s still no official word on pricing, which will be an important factor given the crowded controller market. While the unboxing video alone doesn’t confirm an exact release date, its presence in Steam’s backend strongly suggests that an announcement or launch isn’t far off.
