Packed Lair Challenges You to Build an Army in Tight Dungeons

Packed Lair Makes You Build an Army Inside a Cramped Dungeon

Heroes usually enter a dungeon with one very clear objective: find the Evil Lord and destroy everything in their path. But has anyone ever stopped to wonder how that villain is supposed to manage when his own lair is already running out of room? Packed Lair officially launched on Steam on September 22, 2026, and chooses to tell the story from the other side. There is no grand adventure about saving the world here. The first thing that needs saving is a dungeon packed to the walls — and the unfortunate ruler trying to keep those heroes outside.

When Even an Empty Tile Becomes a Resource

In Packed Lair, constructing a building is not the hard part. Finding somewhere to put it is.

Players choose new buildings, rotate them, and try to fit everything inside the dungeon while making the most of every available space. Some buildings generate gold, others spawn minions, while others strengthen troops or support nearby structures. The problem is that the game rarely lets players have everything at once. An economic building may speed up resource generation but take away valuable room for additional troops; an apparently wasted empty space may actually be necessary to maintain a synergy between several structures. Even a dungeon that looks perfectly organized can quickly collapse if its layout cannot generate enough strength to survive the next wave. Space becomes a resource every bit as important as gold.

When the heroes finally break in, every decision made during the building phase is put to the test.

Goblins, lizardmen, dragons, and other minions automatically rush into battle in an auto-battler system, but players are not completely removed from the action. Spells can still be cast directly to rescue a position that is about to collapse or turn a fight around at the right moment. Combat therefore feels like a natural continuation of dungeon building: a strong layout helps the army function efficiently, while any weakness in the setup may need to be patched on the fly. After every battle, the dungeon can expand, new buildings become available, and the placement puzzle grows more complicated. Meta progression, different starting building choices, and varied combat areas also give each run room to develop in a different direction rather than simply repeating the same layout.

Multiple factions add another reason to rethink how the dungeon is built. The Golden Stars system added after launch marks factions that have already completed the game, encouraging players to begin another run with a different set of tools and a new approach to organizing their lair.

Development before release also helped push Packed Lair closer to this central idea. Based on feedback from the demo, Fables of Wits reworked the base-building phase, reduced reliance on RNG, added meta progression, and even turned some spell upgrades into physical buildings that must occupy space inside the dungeon. In other words, even becoming stronger comes at the cost of the game's most valuable resource: room. The full version is now available on Steam, while its first patch arrived only one day after launch to address performance issues, achievements, buildings, and unit positioning.

Packed Lair does not try to give players a huge dungeon. It does the opposite: gives them too little room, far too many things that all seem necessary, and then forces them to decide what deserves to stay.
