ReStory After 2 Weeks: The Success of an Electronics Repair Game

On August 6, ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs officially launched on Steam with a relatively simple idea: players run an electronics repair shop in Tokyo during the 2000s. Two weeks later, the game from Mandragora and tinyBuild has quickly become one of the more notable indie success stories of August. From selling 100,000 copies on its first day to surpassing 300,000 copies in just one week, ReStory has not only made a strong commercial impact but has also maintained around 95% positive reviews on Steam. More importantly, the development team has continued to release updates, addressing issues and responding to player feedback along the way.

ReStory Is Succeeding Beyond Just Its Sales Numbers

If we only look at sales, ReStory has already had a very impressive launch. Within less than 24 hours of release, the game surpassed 15,000 concurrent players and sold 100,000 copies. The development team also confirmed that the game had a 97% positive rating at the time. That is a particularly strong start for a relatively small indie title, but what makes it even more interesting is that the momentum did not stop after the first day. On August 13, exactly one week after launch, the team confirmed that ReStory had surpassed 300,000 copies sold. This shows that the game's appeal continued well beyond its initial release, rather than being limited to a short-lived launch spike.

The player response has also helped reinforce that commercial success. Steam currently has more than 7,000 reviews for the game, with around 95% positive feedback, earning it an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. Since the number of reviews changes constantly, the exact figure can increase from day to day, but the overall positive rating remains very high.

Much of what players enjoy about ReStory seems to come directly from its core gameplay loop. Players take apart devices, clean components, diagnose problems, replace faulty parts, and put everything back together before selling the repaired item or returning it to the customer. Tasks that could easily feel dry in a simulation game have instead been turned into a fairly relaxing and satisfying gameplay loop with an addictive quality. On top of that, the Y2K setting plays an important role. MP3 players, game consoles, cameras, and other old electronic devices are not simply tools for players to repair; they also create a strong sense of nostalgia. This is one of the elements that gives ReStory its own identity among an increasingly diverse range of simulation games.

However, ReStory's success does not mean the game is completely without problems.

Some community members and critics have pointed out that the repair gameplay loop can become repetitive over time, while the story and characters do not always reach the same level as the gameplay itself. A few issues with the interface and the way certain systems work have also been mentioned. These limitations partly explain why ReStory has received some mixed reviews from critics, despite earning an overall score of 83/100 from 12 critic reviews on Metacritic.

What is worth noting is that the development team has not ignored these weaknesses. In roughly its first two weeks, ReStory received multiple updates in quick succession. Patch 1.0.011r, released on August 19, focused on achievements, gameplay, UI, quest items, QoL improvements, and several audio-related issues. Just two days later, 1.0.013r was released with a wide range of fixes, including a memory leak, issues preventing players from progressing through certain parts of the story, problems involving the inventory, gamepad support, audio, and various specific devices. The update also added 5 save slots, directly addressing a request from the community.

This update pace is particularly notable because it has continued immediately after such a successful launch. Rather than simply focusing on sales, the team is still actively monitoring feedback, fixing bugs, and improving QoL to further polish the current experience. And ReStory is not stopping there. The team has already announced its first content update for September 14, which is expected to add new story content, a new character, and a new gadget. This will also be when the studio shares more details about the game's long-term roadmap.

After two weeks, it is still too early to say whether ReStory will maintain its momentum for months or eventually grow into a long-running franchise. Gameplay variety, player retention, and the quality of future content updates will all play an important role in determining where the game goes from here. But based on what it has achieved so far, ReStory clearly has a strong foundation. An indie game selling more than 300,000 copies in its first week, maintaining around 95% positive reviews on Steam, and continuing to receive active support from its development team is no small achievement.

The success of ReStory, then, is about more than just the numbers. The game has found the right audience: players who enjoy a relaxing experience, a strong sense of nostalgia, and the satisfaction of personally restoring old electronic devices. If Mandragora can maintain its current level of support and deliver new content that matches the quality players are hoping for, ReStory has every opportunity to turn an impressive launch into a much longer-lasting journey.

Ce n’est clairement pas le genre de jeu qui est fait pour moi, mais ça fait plaisir de voir qu’il trouve son public et qu’il plaît autant aux joueurs. Tant mieux pour le studio
This is clearly not the kind of game for me, but it's nice to see that it's finding its audience and that players are enjoying it so much. Good for the studio!

For fans of PowerWash Simulator or Unpacking, it is a perfect fit; for others, it might feel too slow or repetitive.
