Why everyone is suddenly playing Sandustry
At first glance, Sandustry looks like the kind of small automation indie you might scroll past without thinking twice. Then you notice that it was built by a solo developer, recently launched into Early Access, peaked at around 12,500 concurrent players on Steam, and is sitting at roughly 97% positive reviews. Suddenly, this little pixel factory game looks a lot more interesting.
Developed by Erik Lantto, Sandustry takes the familiar joy of building increasingly complicated production lines and mixes it with a world where almost everything follows physical rules. Instead of simply placing machines and connecting conveyor belts, you have to think about sand falling, water flowing, steam rising, materials melting, freezing, burning and reacting with each other.
That physics system is easily one of Sandustry's coolest features. Water can turn into steam, sand can absorb moisture, lava can become a useful—and extremely dangerous—tool, and the environment itself often becomes part of whatever strange machine you're trying to build.
Your factory has to fight physics
The automation side is surprisingly deep too. Players can build conveyor systems, pipes, pumps, filters, drones, smelters and other production machines while gradually unlocking more technology. There are even logic gates, sensors and switches, giving dedicated factory builders plenty of opportunities to create ridiculously complicated automated systems.
Exploration keeps things from becoming one endless conveyor-belt puzzle. Sandustry's planet is packed with underground areas, resources and mysterious structures waiting to be uncovered. Getting somewhere isn't always about finding the intended doorway either. If ice is blocking your path, melting it might work. If something needs to disappear, there's a good chance explosives, lasers or a flamethrower can solve the problem.
That freedom gives Sandustry a wonderfully chaotic side. Your carefully planned factory can quickly turn into a physics experiment, and figuring out how to control that chaos is a huge part of the fun.
Of course, Sandustry is still in Early Access, so players have reported some bugs, performance problems and rough edges. The good news is that updates have already been arriving quickly, while the overwhelmingly positive reception suggests most players are more than happy to overlook the occasional problem.
For a solo-developed game, reaching more than 12,000 simultaneous Steam players is already an impressive achievement. Sandustry doesn't just copy the factory-building formula—it gives it a messy, physical sandbox twist that makes experimentation almost impossible to resist.
