Steam stats reveal AMD CPUs rising in popularity with PC gamers
Valve has published the findings of its latest Steam hardware survey, providing intriguing insights into its user demographic. In August, AMD achieved a significant milestone by exceeding 40% of the CPU market share for the first time, while Intel experienced a decline. This trend has persisted, with AMD currently commanding a 42% share of the CPU market among gamers.
Back in 2020, Intel held a dominant 77% market share for CPUs in Steam’s hardware survey. Today, Intel’s market share stands at 57.68%. If this trend continues, AMD may surpass 50% of the CPU market share on Steam within the next year.
It’s important to note that Steam’s hardware survey includes all PCs that use Steam, not just newly assembled ones. AMD's rapid increase in market share suggests that the majority of newly built gaming PCs are equipped with AMD Ryzen CPUs. Additionally, it seems that upgraders are replacing older Intel-based gaming systems with new AMD-powered models.

Intel’s substantial CPU share on Steam is primarily due to its long-term users. Not all PC gamers upgrade their systems frequently. This is why it may take a considerable amount of time for market share dynamics to shift in Steam's hardware survey. If current trends persist, an increasing number of Intel-based PCs will be phased out, while more AMD-powered systems will be constructed to take their place. Should Intel fail to regain its foothold in the PC gaming market, AMD is well-positioned to become the leading CPU provider on Steam.
This is an ideal moment to upgrade to the latest generation of gaming performance. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D continues the advantage of 3D V-Cache with state-of-the-art Zen 5 architecture, improved clock speeds, and enhanced efficiency, offering the smoothest and most responsive gaming experience to date.
