Windows 10 users struggle with new-generation AMD GPUs
AMD has just announced a transition in firmware standards for the Radeon RX 9000 series graphics cards, shifting from the traditional BIOS to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). However, this decision may cause compatibility issues for users still running Windows 10 and older motherboards.
According to AMD, switching to UEFI offers several benefits, including improved security, better compatibility with various devices, faster firmware updates, support for large-capacity hard drives, and faster boot/shutdown times. The Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT models will be the first to adopt this new standard.
However, this decision may pose challenges for a significant portion of users, especially those still using Windows 10 and older motherboards. According to Steam statistics, over 40% of PC users are still running Windows 10, and many of them may have motherboards that do not support UEFI. This could lead to incompatibility issues when upgrading to AMD's new graphics cards.

To address this issue, users have two options:
- Upgrade their motherboard: This is the most thorough solution, ensuring compatibility with the new graphics cards and Windows 11.
- Continue using BIOS: However, this means they will not be able to use AMD’s latest graphics card models.
- AMD's move is seen as part of a broader effort to encourage users to transition to Windows 11. Microsoft has also announced that it will charge for Extended Security Updates (ESU) for those who continue using Windows 10 after its support officially ends on October 14 this year.
Users should check whether their motherboard supports UEFI before upgrading to AMD's new graphics cards. If unsure, they can refer to the motherboard manufacturer's website or search for information online.
