Xbox disc-to-digital program preserves access to physical game discs

After months of rumors, Microsoft has officially confirmed a new way for Xbox players to bring their physical game libraries into the digital era. The company is beginning testing of a disc-to-digital feature that will let owners of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games convert their disc-based licenses into digital entitlements.

The announcement came during Gamescom, where Microsoft described the feature as part of its broader effort to improve game preservation. The idea is fairly straightforward: insert a supported game disc into an Xbox console, boot up the game, and claim its digital equivalent. Once converted, supported titles can offer access to features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, while still retaining the original physical disc.

Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs are already compatible with the system. Thousands of games will be supported when testing begins, although the company hasn't provided a complete list or explained why certain titles won't qualify initially. The first phase will be limited to Xbox Insiders, with testing scheduled to begin on Monday, August 31. Microsoft hasn't announced when the feature will become available to everyone else.

"We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time," Microsoft said, emphasizing that the initial rollout is only the beginning. The company also acknowledged that not every game will be supported at launch, but described the program as an important step toward ensuring players can keep access to games they've purchased for years to come.

Interestingly, Microsoft hasn't given the feature an official name yet. That could change once the broader rollout begins, when the company may provide more details about exactly how the system works and which games are eligible.

The timing is also noteworthy. As the industry continues moving toward digital distribution, physical game ownership is becoming increasingly complicated. Microsoft's approach gives players who already own discs a relatively painless way to gain some of the advantages associated with digital purchases without simply abandoning their existing libraries.

For now, however, you'll need to join the Xbox Insider Program if you want to try the feature ahead of the public release. The program provides early access to upcoming Xbox features on both consoles and PC, although joining does not guarantee access to every individual test.
