The war unfolds across an enormous, meticulously detailed 66,000-hex map spanning the whole of North America, covering from the frigid Canadian frontier to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. This vast landscape offers a living, breathing theatre of war, where railroads, rivers, cities, and terrain shape every decision. Raise and deploy volunteer regiments, manage logistics, and transition raw recruits into battle-hardened divisions as the conflict escalates.

With professional armies virtually nonexistent at the start of 1861, you'll be responsible for forging a fighting force from scratch. Train and equip your troops, invest in cutting-edge technologies like ironclads and field telegraphs, and call upon legendary commanders such as Lee, Grant, Sherman, and Jackson to lead your armies. Each general brings unique strengths to the battlefield, turning the tide in crucial engagements if used wisely.

The game's naval and river systems add a new dimension of strategy. Navigate America's great waterways with custom river craft, establish inland ports, and command fleets of wooden ships and ironclads across the Atlantic coast. Reconnaissance and intelligence become vital; without radios, you'll rely on cavalry scouts, partisans, and observation balloons to uncover enemy positions and anticipate their movements.

Diplomacy adds further depth to the struggle. European powers such as Britain, France, and Spain may intervene based on the war's progress and your political decisions. Strategic Command: American Civil War includes six historical and alternate-history campaigns that cover the war from start to finish, including "Blue and Gray" (1861), "Scott’s Great Snake" (1862), and the hypothetical "Trent War," where Britain recognizes the Confederacy.
