Bandai Namco Clarifies Echoes of Aincrad Difficulty Levels
When Death Game Mode was first revealed, many players naturally assumed it was simply another Hardcore Mode similar to those found in other RPGs. However, Bandai Namco's latest overview of the game's difficulty settings paints a much more interesting picture. Rather than being a standalone difficulty level, Death Game Mode is designed as an independent gameplay mechanic that can be combined with different difficulty settings, giving players more ways to experience the world of Aincrad than many initially expected.
Death Game is more than just a challenge—it offers a different way to experience Aincrad
In its latest Steam update, Bandai Namco outlined the four difficulty settings available in Echoes of Aincrad, with each one tailored to a different playstyle:
- Story: Designed for players who want to focus on the narrative, allowing them to overcome enemies more easily by developing their character and upgrading equipment.
- Normal: Provides a balanced experience between story progression and combat, making it the ideal choice for most players.
- Hard: Intended for those confident in their combat skills, requiring effective use of dodges, guards, and proper character builds.
- Very Hard: Increases enemy action speed, forcing players to make full use of every combat mechanic. Bandai Namco recommends this setting for fans of challenging Action RPGs.
Alongside the difficulty breakdown, Bandai Namco also highlighted that Death Game Mode can be combined with Very Hard to recreate the relentless tension Kirito and the other survivors experienced throughout Sword Art Online.
More importantly, this also clears up a question many players had following the initial Death Game Mode reveal. Rather than functioning as a separate difficulty level, Death Game Mode exists independently from the game's difficulty system. In other words, players are free to choose Story, Normal, Hard, or Very Hard, and then decide whether they also want to enable Death Game Mode.
A single Game Over still means your Save Data is permanently deleted, forcing you to begin the journey all over again.
This design approach gives the impression that Bandai Namco wants to separate combat difficulty from the psychological pressure of survival. Newcomers can enjoy the story on Story difficulty, while veteran players can combine Very Hard with Death Game Mode for a far more unforgiving adventure.
Ultimately, what matters isn't how powerful the monsters are, but how every decision throughout the journey gains meaning when death carries absolute consequences. That is what makes Death Game Mode feel like more than just another difficulty modifier. Instead, it changes the way players approach the world of Aincrad itself. When failure means permanently losing your Save Data and starting over from scratch, every battle, every expedition, and every character progression choice carries far greater weight.
Perhaps that's why separating Death Game Mode from the difficulty system opens up a wider range of ways to experience Echoes of Aincrad. Whether players choose Story to enjoy the narrative or Very Hard to seek the toughest challenge, they can still decide whether they want to embrace the feeling of having "no turning back"—one of the defining elements that made Sword Art Online so memorable.
