Old-school Black Ops fun meets an old-school exploit problem
Call of Duty fans were ready for a proper reunion when the original Black Ops returned on modern PlayStation consoles. Thousands of players rushed back to revisit Nuketown, fire up classic killstreaks and remember a time when unlocking a new weapon attachment felt like the biggest achievement of the week. Unfortunately, the celebration did not stay peaceful for very long.
Before the game had even completed its first weekend, multiplayer lobbies were reportedly filling up with players abusing old XP exploits. Instead of competing normally, some users were repeatedly performing actions designed to generate absurd amounts of experience, reaching high levels almost instantly and then leaving matches behind. Popular modes such as Domination, Demolition and Ground War quickly became frustrating for anyone who simply wanted to enjoy a normal game.
Negative XP turned nostalgia into a multiplayer nightmare
The situation became even worse when reports emerged of manipulated lobbies handing out negative XP. Innocent players could potentially lose progression simply by entering the wrong match, turning what should have been a nostalgic return into a risky multiplayer lottery. Activision later acknowledged that some accounts had been affected and began rolling out server-side corrections.
What makes the whole situation especially disappointing is that Activision should have known how determined exploiters can be. Older Call of Duty games have struggled with modified lobbies and progression cheats for years, so bringing Black Ops to a new generation without stronger launch protections always carried a risk. Nostalgia brought the community back, but Activision appears to have underestimated just how quickly some players would try to break the experience again.
Thankfully, the reunion was not completely destroyed. Activision temporarily disabled affected playlists, introduced an initial fix and restored negatively affected accounts to a playable level. Campaign and Zombies also remained available, while some multiplayer modes continued to function normally.
Still, the first weekend should have been about RC-XD cars racing around corners and players arguing over who gets to use the mystery box. Instead, much of the discussion focused on broken progression and exploit-filled matches.
Black Ops remains one of the most beloved games in Call of Duty history, and the excitement surrounding its return proves that players still care deeply about it. Activision now needs to protect that enthusiasm with stronger updates, because this classic deserves more than a reunion party crashed by exploiters.
