Age of Mythology: Retold – Everything in the New Aztec Expansion

Blood and Obsidian: The Aztecs Arrive in AoM: Retold
Gameplay

The Obsidian Mirror expansion, launching April 21, 2026, finally introduces the long-awaited Aztec pantheon to Age of Mythology: Retold. As the centerpiece of the current expansion cycle, this DLC brings a unique mechanical shift to mythic warfare, centered on the concepts of sacrifice and psychological disruption.

Unlike the original civilizations, the Aztecs utilized a new resource called Tonalli, or life essence. This energy is harvested from fallen enemies on the battlefield and is used to fuel divine Favor and powerful god abilities. Players can even choose to sacrifice their own villagers in times of desperation to trigger massive momentum swings, making their economy as volatile as their military.

Command the Gods: New Deities and Mythic Units Revealed

Commanding this new civilization are three distinct Major Gods: Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca, and Quetzalcoatl. Huitzilopochtli focuses on aggressive military dominance, granting free myth units through combat sacrifice. At the same time, Tezcatlipoca, the god of the "Smoking Mirror," specializes in chaos, utilizing new Fear and Illusion mechanics to break enemy formations.

Quetzalcoatl offers a more defensive, culture-oriented playstyle with powerful aerial myth units like the Feathered Serpent. The expansion also features nine Minor Gods, including the rain god Tlaloc and the skeletal goddess Itzpapalotl, providing a deep pool of myth units such as the fire-breathing Yahui and the regenerating Tlaloque.

Beyond multiplayer, the Obsidian Mirror expansion includes a massive 12-mission campaign that follows the fall of the utopian city of Aztlan. The narrative is uniquely "continent-spanning," following the gods as they cross oceans to recruit legendary allies and clash with the established pantheons of Europe. With the addition of "Fear" mechanics, allowing players to lay traps and build terrifying towers from the remains of defeated foes, the Aztecs offer a fresh, high-stakes tactical layer.

For Age of Mythology: Retold veterans, this expansion is more than a simple add-on; it is a dramatic evolution of the game’s strategic core, rewarding players who can balance the bloody price of sacrifice with the rewards of divine power.
