Darkest Dungeon celebrates its anniversary with a DLC
Just when you thought your sanity was fully restored, your favorite heroes had successfully retired, and your therapist had finally cleared you of affliction checks, Red Hook Studios is handing everyone a fresh torch and pushing us right back into the pitch-black abyss. In celebration of the original gothic roguelike's 10th anniversary, Red Hook Studios has officially announced Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge, the game's first major expansion since 2020’s The Butcher’s Circus. Set to launch on August 18, 2026, for PC, Mac, and consoles, this unexpected DLC proves that no matter how far you travel on the Darkest Dungeon II road trip, all roads eventually lead back to suffering in the estate’s dusty cellars.
Two New "Heroes" Join the Roster
The headliner of The Fire's Edge is a temporal swap that fans of the franchise have been whispering about in shadowy taverns: two beloved hero classes that originally debuted in Darkest Dungeon II are making the journey back in time to brave the original game's classic, side-scrolling horrors. First up is The Duelist, a lethal, haughty fencer who treats eldritch abominations like unruly fencing students. She introduces a complex "stance dancing" style to the first game, smoothly shifting between Aggressive and Defensive stances while maintaining Riposte and darting through your party's ranks—perfect for players who enjoy micromanaging party positioning while panic-clicking through paranoia.
Joining her is The Runaway, a ragged, stealthy vagrant armed with a crude iron poker and an unhealthy passion for pyromania. Her arrival marks a historical milestone for the original Darkest Dungeon engine by introducing the official Burn status effect. Finally, your heroes can set cosmic horrors on fire and watch them melt over time, heavily synergizing with knockbacks, stuns, and pulls. Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer... but setting a giant pig-man on fire definitely speeds things up.
Expanded Hamlet & Trinket Overhauls
Beyond the new flesh destined for the meat grinder, The Fire's Edge expands the local economy of your miserable little estate with three brand-new Hamlet Districts. Players can invest their hard-earned heirlooms into the Academie Duello (a fancy training ground tailored for perfecting the art of swordplay), the Craftworks (an industrial haven geared toward gear tinkering and specialized supplies), and the Archaeological Base Camp (a hub for unearthing ancient relics and questionable artifacts). Additionally, the expansion overhauls trinket strategy by introducing Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets that evolve over the course of a campaign.
Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge promises a delightfully agonizing return to where the nightmare began. Pack extra shovels, stock up on holy water, and prepare your stress meters before you return to Darkest Dungeon.
