DEAD OR ALIVE 6 Last Round falls short of expectations

DEAD OR ALIVE 6 Last Round leaves players disappointed

Right after the game DEAD OR ALIVE 6 Last Round was released at the end of June; the game received countless mixed responses. Let's find out with us the reasons and causes for why this reboot version was criticized so much.

Pros and cons of the revival of the legendary game!

First, talking about the pros, the game has optimized hardware quite well. The game's graphics are significantly upgraded on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, which is shown through smoothness at high resolutions and stable frame rates, bringing an eye-catching combat experience.

Not only that, the completely new Oboro lighting technology applied on the Katana Engine helps character images, sweat effects, and dirt stains on skin and clothes look more realistic and vivid.

The last commendable point is the data transfer policy, which allows old players to carry over their purchased DLC costumes from the original DOA6 to the Last Round version.

However, despite those pros, the game also has relatively many controversial and criticized points. First, the biggest reason causing the fighting game community (FGC) to be disappointed is that the game does not have rollback netcode at all.

In the context where modern fighting games are required to have Rollback Netcode to ensure stable online matchmaking quality, the fact that DOA6LR still keeps the old network system causes the online experience to face many limitations.

Not only that, the game is also entangled in copyright issues regarding 2 characters: Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond. The two guest characters from King of Fighters XIV return, but Koei Tecmo requires players to repurchase them entirely as separate DLCs, even if they previously owned them in the original 2019 game, and the accompanying costumes for these two characters are also not supported for transfer to the new version.

Finally, players on different platforms (such as PS5 and PC) cannot connect and compete with each other, significantly shrinking the number of online players at any given time.

Because all of those reasons, the game received mixed feedback, even receiving a "Mostly Negative" rating on the Steam platform with a fairly low approval rate. However, the publisher also officially revealed that the next sequel project (DOA7) is currently being developed "in secret".

Many experts evaluate this DOA6 Last Round version as a warm-up step for Team NINJA to test graphics technology and survey the market before officially bringing part 7 back stronger. I’m all about motorcycles, retro gaming, and the golden handheld era of the PSP and PS Vita. I love the thrill of the ride just as much as the nostalgia of classic games. I believe games can bring people together, spark creativity, and make the world a little brighter—one adventure at a time.
