DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain, What Lies Beneath the Deep Sea?
After more than two years of development, DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain has officially launched on Steam. Created by Drop Rate Studio, a team consisting of only three members, the game takes players into a world consumed by the Black Rain, where every dive into the Abyssal Pool is a gamble between survival and the unknown dangers waiting beneath the deep sea. To celebrate the release, the development team also shared a heartfelt thank-you message to the community that supported the project from the very beginning, including those who followed the development diaries, played the demo, and helped the game surpass more than 100,000 wishlists before launch.
The Darkness Beneath the Sea and What Should Never Be Awakened
Some fears do not need to be seen to exist.
Perhaps because I have always felt uneasy when standing before deep waters, I have often wondered what might be hiding beneath that endless blue surface. Maybe that is also why DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain made me stop and pay closer attention among the countless new games appearing on Steam every day. Not only because of its dark atmosphere or Lovecraftian inspiration, but also because of the story behind it.
In the world of DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain, the Black Rain has turned the ocean into a deadly and mysterious place. Players will lead a group of survivors, repeatedly diving into the Abyssal Pool to search for resources, gather essential supplies, and maintain their camp before the final Flood arrives. Every journey into the depths is not only a search for survival, but also a confrontation with the dangers hiding in the darkness.
This is also where the game's Lovecraftian atmosphere becomes most apparent. DIVE or DIE does not create fear only through strange creatures, but through the feeling of human vulnerability when facing a world far beyond our ability to understand or control. The deeper players descend into the Abyssal Pool, the stronger the sense of uncertainty becomes, as they begin to wonder what might truly exist beneath those dark waters.
Beyond exploration, the game also creates tension through every survival decision players must make. The resources hidden beneath the ocean are necessary to keep going, but the deeper you venture, the more limited your oxygen becomes, the more the light fades away, and the more dangerous the Eldritch creatures become. A single mistake can cost you valuable supplies, or even a companion your team has spent time caring for and growing attached to.
Perhaps because I once had the chance to work within a game development team, I also paid special attention to the way Drop Rate Studio connected with its community. Rather than only appearing near launch, the three developers consistently shared development diaries, introduced gameplay systems, talked about the world they were building, and listened to player feedback through the demo. When DIVE or DIE surpassed more than 100,000 wishlists on Steam, the first thing they did was not celebrate the achievement itself, but thank everyone who had followed and supported the project.
That sincerity is what makes the journey of DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain feel different from many other indie projects. Players are not simply seeing a finished product on launch day; they are also witnessing the process of three people gradually building, refining, and completing an idea they truly believed in over more than two years.
Alongside the main experience, Drop Rate Studio has also introduced Endless Mode, allowing players to explore the underwater world at their own pace without the pressure of the 40-day limit. However, the developers themselves have shared that the time pressure and difficult choices are what truly define the spirit of the game, while this mode is simply an option for those who want to experience the world in a more relaxed way.
How the community will ultimately judge DIVE or DIE: Children of Rain is something only time can tell. But after following the journey behind this project, what stays with me the most is not only the Eldritch creatures beneath the ocean or the mysterious Lovecraftian atmosphere. It is a truly admirable effort from three developers who stayed committed to their vision, listened to their community, and finally brought their world into the hands of players. Sometimes, the value of a game is not only found in what appears on the screen, but also in the story of the people who dedicated their time and passion to creating it.
