Escape from Playtime Brings a New Direction to Poppy Playtime
The Playtime Co. factory has never been a place for the faint of heart, but this time, even the toys themselves are fighting to survive. After several chapters focused on exploration and puzzle-solving, Mob Entertainment is taking its horror universe in a different direction. Released on Steam on October 21, 2026, in Early Access, Escape from Playtime puts players in control of the Smiling Critters as they gather resources and work together to escape the dangerous creatures roaming the factory. Their adorable appearances won't make survival any easier, especially when danger could be waiting around every corner.
When the toys must find a way to survive
More than just a multiplayer spin-off, Escape from Playtime also expands the official storyline of the franchise. The game takes place after the tragic events of The Hour of Joy but before Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1. The Smiling Critters receive instructions from a mysterious voice known as The Voice, who promises to lead them to safety if they collect enough materials. However, the true intentions behind these requests remain a mystery.
This isn't Mob Entertainment's first attempt at bringing multiplayer to the Poppy Playtime universe. Previously, PROJECT: PLAYTIME introduced a 6v1 asymmetrical horror experience where one player controlled a monster hunting down the others. Escape from Playtime takes a different approach, putting everyone on the same team as they face the dangers of the factory together. The change also extends to the player's perspective. Thanks to the Smiling Critters' tiny size, familiar rooms, furniture, and machinery suddenly feel enormous. Players must crawl through narrow spaces, climb obstacles, and use their surroundings to find a way forward. The toys' colorful cartoon designs also create an interesting contrast with the dark corridors and unsettling atmosphere of Playtime Co.
In terms of gameplay, each run sends the team into an area with a changing layout, where they must collect items, bring them back to a cart named Barry, and meet their quota before escaping. The formula is somewhat reminiscent of R.E.P.O.'s gameplay, another co-op horror game built around collecting valuable items while avoiding dangerous monsters. However, Escape from Playtime adds its own twist through its toy-sized characters and teamwork mechanics:
- Proximity voice chat: Players can communicate effectively only when they're close to each other, while careless noises may attract unwanted attention.
- Survival tools: The Sewing Kit allows players to revive teammates, Hoppy Ears help with movement, and Sketch-A-Map provides a map to keep everyone from getting lost.
- Exploration and evasion: Puzzles, hiding spots, and alternative routes give players ways to avoid danger without relying on direct combat.
One notable change in the Early Access release is the increase in the co-op player limit from four to eight players, following feedback from the Open Beta. The game also features all eight Smiling Critters, with four of them unlocked through gameplay. Although playing solo is possible, Mob Entertainment has made it clear that the experience is primarily designed for groups of friends.
At launch, Playcare School serves as the starting area, where players encounter Boogie Bot, Bunzo Bunny, CatBee, and Miss Delight, alongside other threats that weren't revealed beforehand. According to the official launch announcement, the developer plans to introduce more locations, enemies, items, and gameplay features throughout late 2026 and into 2027.
Of course, the current version still has plenty of room for improvement, particularly when it comes to variety between runs. To me, the biggest appeal of Escape from Playtime isn't just the chaotic experience of escaping with friends, but also the opportunity to uncover more of Playtime Co.'s untold secrets. If Mob Entertainment can successfully build on both aspects, the game could become an interesting new branch of the Poppy Playtime franchise.
