Automatic Super Resolution preview hits ROG Xbox Ally X next month
The ROG Xbox Ally X is scheduled to receive a new AI-driven feature next month. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, Microsoft announced that Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) will begin rolling out in April 2026 as a preview, allowing users to try the technology before it launches more broadly.
Auto SR is Microsoft’s AI-based upscaling solution designed to improve gaming performance while maintaining image clarity. It works by rendering a game at a lower internal resolution - such as 720p - and then using AI to upscale the image to 1080p or higher. By reducing the workload on the GPU, the system can deliver smoother performance without significantly sacrificing visual quality.
Unlike solutions such as Nvidia DLSS or AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, which usually require developers to integrate the technology directly into their games, Auto SR works at the operating system level. This means many compatible games can take advantage of the feature without needing individual developer updates.

The system relies on the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in the handheld’s AMD Ryzen AI chipset. These specialized AI cores are built for machine learning tasks and can handle the upscaling workload efficiently. Offloading this process to the NPU rather than the GPU can help maintain higher performance and may also improve battery life during gameplay. Because the standard Xbox Ally lacks NPU cores, the feature will only benefit the Ally X model.
During GDC, Microsoft showcased the technology using Forza Horizon 5. Running the game at 1440p Ultra settings initially produced about 38 FPS. After enabling Auto SR, performance rose to roughly 51 FPS, representing an improvement of around 30%.
The feature will not support every game, however. Microsoft states that Auto SR currently works with DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles, so compatibility will vary depending on the game.
