Why Montabi is more than just another creature collector
Montabi might look like another cute creature-collecting game at first glance, but there is a lot more going on under the surface. What makes it stand out is the way it combines three very different ideas: collecting monsters, building a deck, and fighting on a tactical grid. It has a little bit of Pokémon in its creature collecting, some Slay the Spire-style card strategy, and even a touch of Mega Man Battle Network in the way positioning matters during fights.
The most interesting part is how closely your team and your deck are connected. Every Montabi brings its own cards and abilities into battle, so choosing which creatures to use also decides what kind of deck you will be playing with. You cannot simply throw your strongest monsters into a team and expect everything to work. Finding creatures whose abilities support each other is a big part of the fun, especially as your build starts coming together during a run.
Every battle gives you something to think about
Combat takes place on a 3x3 grid, and where you place your creatures can completely change what happens next. Some attacks only hit certain spaces, while others become much more useful when enemies are lined up in the right way. Your trainer also joins the action, and keeping them safe is important because losing the trainer means the run is over.
There is a good amount of variety outside the basic battles as well. Montabi includes more than 60 creatures when evolutions are counted, over 500 cards, equipment, Charms, different trainers, random events, and branching paths to explore. Creatures can evolve and pick up new abilities along the way, giving you plenty of reasons to try different teams instead of sticking with the same setup every time.
Players who enjoy a game like Slay the Spire should feel at home with the deckbuilding side, but the creature collecting gives Montabi a very different personality. It feels approachable and colorful without losing the strategy that makes a good roguelike so addictive.
The early response has been very encouraging too, with players giving Montabi a strong reception shortly after launch. It is still early, but its mix of familiar ideas already seems to be winning people over.
