In an unexpected announcement, Nintendo a few hours ago has showcased its upcoming console for the first time. As many had anticipated, it will serve as a direct successor to the Switch, which offered both handheld and docked play options for users based on their preferences. The new version is simply called the Nintendo Switch 2. Details regarding the release date and pricing have yet to be disclosed.
The majority of the video focuses on the design and feel of the hardware itself, highlighting the updates to the screen, the larger Joy-Con controllers, their attachment mechanism to the console, new connectivity options, the integrated stand, and more compared to the original device. There’s even a glimpse of the new docking station that will accompany the console for connecting to larger screens and for charging.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will feature its own exclusive games throughout its lifecycle, but Nintendo has confirmed that it will support titles from the original Nintendo Switch. This compatibility will extend to both physical and digital games, although not the entire library is expected to be supported. More information on backwards compatibility will be shared at a later date.
The Nintendo Switch 2 does not have a confirmed release date just yet, with Nintendo only providing a general “2025” launch timeframe. However, many leaks suggest it may reach fans in the first half of the year. Anticipate a comprehensive announcement along with detailed specifications of its Nvidia-powered chip shortly.
