Nintendo’s Switch 2 console reportedly can’t be used until its day-one update is installed

Nintendo's Switch 2 console is set to launch next week, and some gamers have already managed to get their hands on the new device. These users quickly found out that their Switch 2 is inoperable, as the console requires a day-one update to function correctly.

The Game Business has also reported that Nintendo's new console needs a "significant day-one patch" to operate. This requirement is limiting analysts from providing reviews of the console before its launch. As a result, there will be no preliminary reviews for Nintendo's new console ahead of its June 5th release.

Importantly, this seems to be a widespread issue. Gaming news and deals poster Wario64 shared that they received messages—complete with supporting images—from another Switch 2 owner who got their console early. "I don’t have permission to share pictures," Wario64 stated in a social media post, "but I can mention that when they attempt to start a Switch 1 game, a message appears saying 'Please connect to the internet and update your system.' An update is required to access a game."

With the launch of the Switch 2 just around the corner, we would typically expect first impressions or review content to be released by now. The circumstances surrounding this launch almost suggest that Nintendo is deliberately trying to downplay excitement. This is peculiar, given how crucial console sales are to their business.

Upon release, the Switch 2 boasts an impressive selection of both first-party and third-party titles. Among these are games like Mario Kart World, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Cyberpunk 2077.
