Quake Celebrates 30 Years by Unleashing a Brand-New Nightmare
Thirty years ago, id Software unleashed Quake upon the world and permanently changed the first-person shooter landscape. Three decades later, the legendary FPS is still refusing to sit quietly in a retirement home. Instead, it is celebrating its 30th anniversary by throwing players into another dimension filled with monsters, secrets, weapons and enough industrial horror to make a maintenance engineer reconsider their career choices.
Back from the grave as thrilling as ever
The new Quake: Dawn of the Machine update is now available as a free addition to the classic shooter, giving veterans and newcomers another reason to return to one of gaming's most influential FPS masterpieces. Developed by MachineGames in collaboration with id Software, the update delivers a substantial new adventure rather than merely sprinkling a few anniversary goodies around the place.
At the heart of the update is Dawn of the Machine, a completely new campaign featuring 19 maps packed with the kind of nightmarish architecture, grotesque enemies and brutally fast combat that made Quake famous. This time, Ranger finds himself trapped inside an illusory dimension caught in a mysterious time loop, because apparently simply saving the world once wasn't enough work.
The strange dimension isn't just there for atmospheric purposes, either. The campaign introduces a more interconnected structure in which players can discover new paths, uncover secrets and manipulate elements of the environment as they progress. Runes can open previously inaccessible areas, while permanent upgrades to health and ammunition provide another reason to poke around every suspicious-looking corner.
Naturally, none of this would be complete without something enormous and deeply unpleasant to destroy. The central threat is the Nightmare Machine, a mysterious contraption responsible for the bizarre reality Ranger has found himself trapped inside. Destroying it becomes the ultimate objective, although getting there involves navigating plenty of monsters that would very much prefer Ranger to remain trapped forever.
The enemy roster has also received some fresh nightmares. Dawn of the Machine introduces new variants of familiar Quake creatures, including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog and Blood Shambler. These aren't simply old enemies wearing different hats, either. Their new abilities and behaviours are designed to catch even experienced Quake players off guard.
Thankfully, Ranger isn't entering this particular nightmare empty-handed. The update introduces new weapon variants, including the Super Axe, which can unleash devastating lightning attacks, and the Laser Cannon, capable of firing projectiles that ricochet around the environment. Because Quake has never subscribed to the idea that weapons should be sensible.
The anniversary celebration also comes with a fresh soundtrack from Christian Plogfors, adding a darker and more atmospheric musical layer to the new campaign. It is a fitting accompaniment to a journey through distorted dimensions where pretty much everything wants to kill you.
And then there are the secrets. Plenty of them. Dawn of the Machine encourages players to investigate its environments rather than simply sprinting from one enemy encounter to the next. Hidden areas and discoveries are scattered throughout the campaign, rewarding the sort of player who sees a suspicious wall and immediately thinks, "I wonder if I can shoot that."
The update also expands the classic experience outside of the new campaign. Players can explore an id Vault containing behind-the-scenes material and previously unused development content, including playable maps from Quake's early development. There is also a new Deathmatch map for anyone who would rather celebrate three decades of Quake by introducing their friends to the business end of a rocket launcher.
Three new achievements have been added as well, alongside a new cheats menu that gives players additional ways to experiment with the game. In other words, there is plenty here for both serious completionists and players who simply want to break the laws of physics and see what happens.
What makes Dawn of the Machine particularly impressive is that it doesn't feel like a simple nostalgia trip. MachineGames has taken the fundamental ingredients of classic Quake — speed, exploration, secrets, brutal combat and horrifying creatures — and mixed them with some more modern ideas without sanding away the game's unmistakable personality.
Quake: Dawn of the Machine is available now as a free update for Quake owners, giving the 30-year-old FPS a surprisingly gigantic birthday present. If you missed the original experience for whatever reason, now it's the best time to get you copy of Quake at the cheapest price with our comparator. Three decades after Ranger first stepped into the game's grim universe, the nightmare isn't over. In fact, it has apparently acquired a few new weapons and 19 more maps.
Happy birthday, Quake. Please stop making the walls bleed.
