Valve rumored to launch Steam Deck 2 handheld in 2028
According to the informant KeplerL2, Valve does not intend to introduce a next-generation Steam Deck handheld in the foreseeable future. The leaker states that Valve aims to launch a "Steam Deck 2" handheld in 2028, allowing hardware manufacturers additional time to enhance their handheld gaming technologies.
Valve has indicated that they will only develop a second-generation Steam Deck handheld if they can achieve a significant generational performance improvement. By postponing the release, Valve can build its next Steam Deck with more advanced, powerful hardware, providing gamers with a superior gaming experience.
While Valve could produce a more capable Steam Deck using AMD's current technology, it wouldn't result in a fundamentally new gaming experience. Valve could create a more performant device, but it would simply be an upgraded version of the existing model and not offer entirely new gaming possibilities.

The current Steam Deck may struggle to run many of today’s most demanding titles, but waiting for improved hardware would yield a much better device for gamers.
Although Kepler only provided the potential launch timeframe for the Steam Deck 2, there are insights to glean from this latest information. If accurate, it suggests that Valve is preparing to compete with the anticipated PlayStation 6. According to various PS6 rumors, Sony is expected to unveil a portable version of their next console in 2028, indicating that the Steam Deck 2 will debut around the same period as the PS6 handheld.
The success of the Steam Deck has led to a surge of competitors entering the market. Microsoft is set to launch a Steam Deck rival through an Xbox-branded version of the ROG Asus Ally, which is scheduled for release on October 16.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a handheld that has already proven itself, optimized for top performance, and built for serious gaming on the move, the ROG Ally X stands out prominently. With longer battery longevity, enhanced ergonomics, and full Windows capabilities, it represents what the future of handheld gaming should aspire to.
