Final Fantasy Resonance tops FF7 Rebirth on Steam Charts

Final Fantasy Resonance is only a few days old, and it has already surpassed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Steam. The game launched on October 22, 2026 and reached 42,885 concurrent players, ahead of Rebirth's 40,564. That makes it the most popular single-player Final Fantasy on Steam by that measure, and players are rating it 97% positive.

Steam concurrent players numbers

The concurrent player count tells us how many people are playing the game at once, but it doesn't show how many copies have been sold. Still, the game has another reason to celebrate, a 97% positive review score. That's a strong sign that players are enjoying the game, rather than simply checking it out.

Resonance is the first Final Fantasy in the HD-2D style, which pairs pixel-art characters with 3D environments and modern lighting. Square Enix introduced the look with Octopath Traveler in 2018 and later used it in Triangle Strategy, the Live A Live remake and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. You can try the game for free with a demo available on all platforms, and your progress will carry over if you buy the full version. You can also check out our guide to Final Fantasy Resonance to learn more about its gameplay and Visions.

The game's success suggests that there's still a strong audience for classic turn-based Final Fantasy games. The free demo may have played a part by giving players a chance to try it without losing their progress when they purchase the full version. Meanwhile, familiar faces like Cloud and Tidus may have helped bring longtime fans back, although it's hard to say for sure.

A strong opening stretch is one thing, and staying power is another. Whether Resonance keeps its lead will depend on how long players stick with it and how quickly the next big Final Fantasy release arrives. Ready to see what the fuss is about?
