Former Sony exec suggests a 2028 launch for the PlayStation 6 console
While fans eagerly await breakthroughs from the PlayStation 6, a former Sony executive has made a rather surprising prediction about the release date of the next-generation console.
According to Shuhei Yoshida, who held key positions at Sony and PlayStation for many years, the PlayStation 6 may not launch in 2027 as many have speculated but could instead arrive in 2028.
He explained that the lifespan of console generations is getting longer. In the past, the gap between console generations was around 5–6 years, but now that number has increased significantly. The PlayStation 4 debuted in November 2013, followed by the PlayStation 4 Pro in 2016. However, the PlayStation 5 didn’t arrive until November 2020, marking a seven-year gap between console generations. In contrast, the original PlayStation (1995) and PlayStation 2 (2000) were released five years apart. The PlayStation 3 launched six years later in 2006, while the PlayStation 4 followed seven years after that.

Yoshida also revealed that the PlayStation 5 generation was delayed due to production issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the global chip shortage. The former Sony executive believes that companies overinvested during the pandemic, leading to an "overreaction" once COVID-19 subsided. This has had a significant impact on the gaming industry as a whole, including the development of the PlayStation 6.
Previously, there have been many rumors about the PlayStation 6 being in development. Some sources have even suggested that the PS6 chip is nearly complete and ready for the production phase.
However, with Shuhei Yoshida’s latest insights, it seems that fans will have to wait longer than expected to experience the PlayStation 6.
Nevertheless, Yoshida’s information offers a fresh perspective on the development process of the PlayStation 6. Hopefully, Sony will use this time to deliver a truly groundbreaking and highly anticipated console for its fans.
