ASUS’ ROG Xbox Ally X proves impressively repairable for a handheld
iFixit has put out a new "repair review" for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, informing users about the ease or difficulty of repairing the device. Fortunately, it seems that repairs and upgrades for the device will be quite straightforward, which is positive news for those looking to install larger SSDs or replace worn joysticks.
Since the handheld uses the same type of screws throughout, the ROG Xbox Ally X can be taken apart with relative simplicity—there's no need for switching tools unnecessarily. In addition, none of the components in the device are glued down, which facilitates an easier process for replacing and upgrading parts.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is equipped with a standard M.2 2280 SSD, allowing users to upgrade to larger storage options with ease. They could opt for 2TB, 4TB, or even 8TB M.2 SSDs if desired. However, it should be noted that reinstalling Windows can be a sluggish experience, as utilizing the device's "ASUS Cloud Recovery" feature could take a significant amount of time. Thus, don't anticipate speedy SSD upgrades.
iFixit has assigned the ROG Xbox Ally a preliminary repairability score of 7 out of 10, which is impressive for a new device. Components like joysticks, speakers, and several others can be removed without difficulty. Moreover, the system's battery is also removable and replaceable, which is beneficial for gamers intending to use their ROG Xbox Ally X for the long haul. Nonetheless, it is still uncertain how easily replacement parts will be available.
Keep in mind that the joysticks on the ROG Xbox Ally X may experience stick drift. However, these components can be replaced. Additionally, it’s possible that Hall-effect versions of these joysticks could become available in the future.
On the other hand, if you're seeking a handheld device that is already well-established, optimized for top-tier performance, and crafted for serious gaming while on the move, the ROG Ally X emerges as an outstanding option. With improved battery longevity, better ergonomics, and complete Windows functionality, it represents a significant advancement in handheld gaming evolution.
