Explore a haunted household in The Crimson Maid

The Crimson Maid proves two developers can build a big mystery

The Crimson Maid is the kind of indie game that immediately makes you wonder how such a small team managed to build something this ambitious. Developed largely by a two-person team, this compact gothic adventure blends first-person exploration, visual-novel-style conversations and a dark family mystery into one surprisingly polished package.

Players step into the shoes of Marius Rosenthal, a young man studying to become a priest who returns to his family’s mansion after learning that his father is seriously ill. Unfortunately, this is not exactly a warm homecoming. The Rosenthal household is packed with old grudges, strained relationships and secrets that everyone would prefer to keep buried beneath the floorboards.

Things become even more complicated when Marius meets Irina, the family’s mysterious new maid. His growing attraction to her clashes directly with his religious path, creating a personal conflict that sits at the centre of the story. Add an unexpected death, supernatural elements and several suspicious family members, and Marius quickly finds himself investigating much more than his father’s condition.

A mansion full of secrets

Gameplay mainly revolves around exploring the estate, examining objects, reading documents and speaking with the people living inside the mansion. Conversations can reveal new information, while Marius’ journal keeps track of discoveries and personal thoughts. The puzzles are designed to support the story rather than completely stop your progress, making the experience accessible even for players who do not usually spend hours fighting with cryptic adventure-game logic.

With 16 chapters, multiple endings and choices that can change how events unfold, The Crimson Maid feels like an explorable visual novel wrapped inside a first-person mystery game. A full playthrough is relatively short, but the different outcomes and chapter-selection feature provide a good reason to return and investigate paths you may have missed.

Fans of Last Days of Lazarus may notice some similarities, especially in the focus on dysfunctional families, religious imagery and unsettling supernatural events. However, The Crimson Maid places more emphasis on romance, dialogue choices and the complicated relationship between Marius and Irina.

For such a small production, the result is impressively atmospheric and packed with personality. It may not be the longest mystery adventure around, but it looks like an excellent choice for players who enjoy creepy mansions, morally complicated characters and stories where every family dinner feels slightly dangerous.
