The Legend of Zelda titles on Switch 2 appears to lack cloud save support
Both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are heading to Nintendo Switch 2 with major performance upgrades. However, there’s one unexpected omission that’s leaving fans puzzled: no support for cloud saves on either title.
The news emerged following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, where the new system was officially showcased alongside several returning and upcoming games. Among the highlights were Switch 2 editions of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, featuring enhanced frame rates, visuals, and loading times. But a small note on their store listings has now raised serious questions.

No Cloud Save Support for Zelda on Switch 2
The store pages for both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2 include the following disclaimer:
“Save data created in the second save data slot in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch.”
Not only does this indicate a lack of save data compatibility between versions, but it also suggests that new cloud saves can’t be created in the Switch 2 editions. Players will still be able to import their existing save files from the original Switch, but no new cloud backups will be possible going forward.
Oddly enough, this limitation appears to affect only these two Zelda titles. Other games launching with Switch 2 editions—such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land—don’t list the same restriction. To add to the confusion, the Japanese eShop pages for both Zelda games still list cloud save support as available, making it unclear whether this is a regional policy difference, a technical limitation, or simply a translation or wording error in the US and EU versions.
Despite the uncertainty around cloud saves, fan excitement remains strong. The Switch 2 versions of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are receiving high praise for delivering a smoother and more stable experience, with significant improvements to frame rate, loading times, and overall visual fidelity. Higher and more stable frame rates are expected to elevate the experience for returning and new players alike.
Still, the lack of cloud saves is a notable omission—especially for players who value secure data backups and system migration convenience.
At the time of writing, Nintendo has not yet responded to the cloud save confusion. It’s entirely possible this is a miscommunication or localization error, but for now, fans are left hoping for an official clarification.
