The Tomb Raider franchise boasts impressive sales
Nobody would have imagined that Square Enix would sell most of its western studios to the Embracer Group and keep only those Japan-based. The announcement of the purchase has left many people wondering about the future of their favorite franchises, but it has also had other unexpected results. The company has revealed a timeline showing the lifetime sales of the Tomb Raider franchise that keeps track of all the games sold since 1996.
The total sales are impressive. Tomb Raider has sold over 88 million units, but the other details in the timeline also reveal several interesting facts. The reboot trilogy, which includes Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, adds up to 38 million copies sold. It proves that the franchise is not stagnant and keeps growing over the year, despite major changes in the gameplay and a new approach to Lara Croft's story. Also, it's quite interesting to see that Tomb Raider had more than 53 million paid mobile downloads as of December 2021. The popularity of the franchise has expanded beyond video games, and it generated a huge revenue via movies and all kinds of merchandising.
The future of Tomb Raider
You can learn about all this in the official video about Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montreal by Embracer Group, which also shows Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos talking about Tomb Raider:
"This is just looking at the games. We still have an entire transmedia world out there, known for films, new series coming, comics, and looking across what the possibilities are for this franchise, I tell you the best is yet to come."
Despite the uncertainty that follows such a purchase, the continuity of the Tomb Raider series seems to be guaranteed, and the new Unreal Engine 5 Tomb Raider will be available whenever it's ready.
