WARDOGS Turns the FPS Formula Upside Down
The FPS genre has a bit of a problem. There are plenty of shooters, plenty of soldiers, plenty of explosions and enough battle passes to fill a small warehouse. Yet finding something that genuinely feels different is becoming increasingly difficult. Enter WARDOGS, the upcoming large-scale military shooter from BULKHEAD, which appears to have stumbled onto a surprisingly effective recipe: take the chaos of a massive war, throw 100 players into it, add vehicles and destruction, and then give everyone a little more freedom than they are used to.
The result has caught players' attention in a big way. With WARDOGS scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on September 10, the game has already generated a level of pre-launch excitement that would make considerably larger FPS franchises nervous. Its second closed beta reached a peak of 162,488 concurrent players on Steam, while the standalone playtest client briefly ranked third overall on the platform, behind Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. And that number becomes even more impressive when you remember one tiny detail: WARDOGS isn't even out yet.
At first glance, WARDOGS might sound like another military FPS attempting to invade the territory occupied by Battlefield 6, Arma Reforger and other large-scale shooters. Dig a little deeper, however, and BULKHEAD's game starts looking considerably less conventional.
So, why exactly is WARDOGS different?
WARDOGS puts up to 100 players across three teams into a battle for control of dynamically selected zones. Instead of simply following a predetermined sequence of objectives, teams have to react to where the battle is moving and figure out how to exploit the battlefield around them. The game combines infantry combat with vehicles, construction and environmental destruction, creating a sandbox where the battlefield can change considerably during a match. That distinction is important. WARDOGS isn't simply asking players to capture Point A, run to Point B and repeat until somebody wins. The surrounding systems are designed to make players feel as though they are participating in an actual military operation rather than completing a very elaborate checklist.
The battlefield is more than just a pretty background
One of the game's biggest selling points is its approach to the battlefield itself. The game features large environments that can be destroyed and manipulated, while players can also construct outposts to establish tactical positions. Vehicles add another layer to the equation, meaning the best strategy isn't necessarily to sprint toward the objective with a rifle and hope for the best.
Sometimes you need infantry. Sometimes you need a vehicle. Sometimes you need someone to build a position that gives your team an advantage. And sometimes, presumably, you need the guy who has been driving around in a Humvee for ten minutes to finally remember that there is an objective. That variety gives WARDOGS an identity of its own. It is trying to create a military sandbox where different approaches can coexist rather than forcing every player into exactly the same gameplay loop.
WARDOGS wants teamwork without making it feel like homework
The tactical element is another major reason the game has attracted attention.WARDOGS sits somewhere between the accessibility of a mainstream FPS and the methodical nature of a military simulation. It wants players to think about positioning, resources and teamwork, but it doesn't appear interested in turning every match into a three-hour military briefing. That middle ground could be one of its biggest strengths.
Players looking for constant twitch-based action have plenty of other options. Players who want an ultra-serious simulation have those too. WARDOGS is instead targeting people who want big battles with meaningful teamwork without needing a military degree to understand what is happening.
The game's economic systems also add another interesting layer. Players have access to cash and can spend it on equipment and vehicles, while team-oriented actions can help them build up resources. In other words, contributing to the battle isn't necessarily limited to getting the highest kill count. That could make the game considerably more welcoming to players who aren't interested in becoming a leaderboard climber.
The marketing is almost as unusual as the game
BULKHEAD hasn't exactly followed the standard marketing playbook either. Rather than spending all its time screaming about how WARDOGS is going to revolutionize gaming, the studio has leaned into a much more playful approach. Its promotional material has included the deliberately provocative "10 Reasons NOT to Buy WARDOGS" video, essentially inviting players to look at the game's potential problems before deciding whether they actually want it. Oddly enough, that honesty may be helping.
The studio has also treated the closed betas as genuine stress tests rather than glorified marketing demos. After earlier tests caused infrastructure problems due to the enormous turnout, BULKHEAD has been deliberately testing how its systems cope with huge numbers of players.
A New FPS Arriving at a Very Convenient Time
WARDOGS is also entering the market at an interesting moment.
The modern FPS landscape is packed with established franchises, but many players are increasingly looking for alternatives to the familiar combination of seasonal content, battle passes, ranked playlists and increasingly complicated progression systems. WARDOGS doesn't necessarily reinvent the FPS genre. Instead, it takes the parts that make large-scale military shooters exciting and pushes them together into a single sandbox. That simplicity might actually be its secret weapon. Sometimes players don't need another revolutionary genre twist. They just want to jump into a huge battlefield, grab a rifle, drive a tank, blow up a building and discover that their entire team has somehow decided to attack the wrong hill.
The real test begins on September 10
WARDOGS has already proved that people are curious with huge numbers during its beta . It has demonstrated that its unusual blend of tactical combat, large-scale warfare, vehicles, construction and destruction can attract an enormous audience. Now it needs to prove that those players aren't simply showing up because the next shiny FPS has appeared on Steam.
If the community sticks around, WARDOGS could become one of the more interesting new multiplayer shooters of 2026. And if you want to join the experience, all you need to do is use our comparator to purchase WARDOGS at the cheapest price.
