Necron faction: a Xenos menace that shouldn't have been disturbed
If you thought sleeping for millions of years would make someone grumpy, the Necrons are here to prove you right. The latest faction overview trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 shines the spotlight on Warhammer 40K's oldest mechanical menace, revealing an army that doesn't shout, charge recklessly, or celebrate victories. It simply marches forward, vaporizes anything in its way, and treats the galaxy like it's reclaiming an overdue parking space.
A Mechanical Xenos Nightmare
The new trailer introduces Thothmek, a Chronomancer of the Szerkhan Dynasty who awakens to find that lesser races have been trampling across sacred Necron tombs on Kronus. Unsurprisingly, he's not thrilled about it. Rather than engaging in lengthy diplomacy, Thothmek opts for the Necron approach: wake the legions, activate the war machines, and remind everyone who ruled the galaxy long before humanity figured out how to sharpen sticks.
The footage perfectly captures why the Necrons remain one of the most intimidating factions in the Warhammer universe. Their armies advance with almost unsettling calm, shrugging off damage while repairing themselves and relentlessly pushing toward their objectives. There's no frantic scrambling or emotional speeches; just cold, calculated annihilation delivered by legions of immortal robots that have had an awfully long time to perfect the art of warfare.
Classic units make plenty of appearances throughout the trailer. Endless ranks of Necron Warriors form the backbone of the army, while Lychguard escort their commanders into battle with imposing shields and deadly blades. Mechanical Canoptek Scarabs scuttle across the battlefield to support the advance, and towering Triarch Stalkers unleash devastating firepower from afar, reminding opponents that hiding behind cover is more of a suggestion than a survival strategy.
King Art Games also offers a closer look at the Necrons' unique gameplay mechanics. Rather than expanding like traditional RTS factions, players will restore dormant tomb complexes and generate the Dominion resource to awaken increasingly powerful constructs. As the campaign unfolds, every captured position feels less like conquering new territory and more like flipping the lights back on in an ancient empire that's finally reopened for business.
The Necrons become the fourth confirmed playable faction in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 alongside the Space Marines, Orks, and the Adeptus Mechanicus. Each army will feature its own campaign during the struggle for Kronus, promising vastly different strategies and perspectives on the conflict. Judging by this latest reveal, the Necrons are shaping up to be the faction for players who prefer methodical domination over chaotic brawling.
With every new trailer, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 continues to emphasize what made the classic series so memorable: wildly different factions that fundamentally change the way you approach the battlefield. The return to Kronus is going to be anything but peaceful.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 launches for PC on September 17, bringing one of strategy gaming's most iconic battlefields back to life, just in time for the Necrons to remind everyone that they were there first. The game will deliver a more curated experience than its predecessor, taking back the RTS series to its roots and offering gameplay that is more similar to the original hit, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.
