Windows 11 gets new Xbox Mode, offering early look at Project Helix UI

Microsoft has officially begun rolling out its new full-screen gaming experience for Windows 11. Earlier this year, the company confirmed plans to introduce a console-like interface for PC gaming, and now “Xbox Mode” is starting to reach users.

The announcement was made by Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald and Windows + Devices Corporate Vice President Ian LeGrow. The update is currently being deployed to Windows 11 desktops, laptops, and handheld devices in select regions, with a broader rollout expected over the coming weeks.

According to Microsoft, Xbox Mode is designed to prioritize gaming by offering a cleaner, more focused interface. Inspired by the Xbox console experience, it highlights your game library and recently played titles while reducing background distractions, making it easier to jump straight into gameplay.

Once enabled, users can navigate their library entirely with a controller. The interface also integrates an Xbox-style game library that can launch titles from multiple PC storefronts, not just Microsoft’s own ecosystem. Players can switch between Xbox Mode and the standard Windows 11 desktop at any time.

Microsoft emphasized that Windows has always played a key role in PC gaming due to its open platform, and this new feature builds on that foundation. By combining Xbox and Windows, the company aims to refine how players interact with their games across different devices and playstyles.

To access Xbox Mode, users should make sure their system is updated to the latest version of Windows 11. Then, head to Settings > Gaming > Full Screen Experience, where you can enable the feature, choose a home app, and even set it to launch automatically at startup.

Microsoft also plans to refine Xbox Mode over time based on user feedback. With future hardware like Project Helix expected to support PC gaming, this feature could become a central part of the broader Xbox ecosystem moving forward.
