FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

: How does the 'Iron Will' mechanic affect combat encounters in Of Ash and Steel?
Iron Will is a resource that players build up by successfully parrying or dodging enemy attacks. When depleted, characters enter a 'Desperation' state, offering a significant damage boost but also increasing incoming damage. Managing Iron Will is crucial for both offensive and defensive playstyles, allowing for calculated risks or safer, sustained combat.; Can you elaborate on the 'Echoes of the Fallen' system and its impact on progression?
Defeated bosses and elite enemies leave behind 'Echoes of the Fallen.' These spectral remnants can be consumed to unlock unique passive abilities or temporary combat buffs. The choice of which Echoes to absorb influences your character's build and can drastically alter your approach to later challenges.; What role do 'Forged Affinities' play in customizing weapon capabilities?
Forged Affinities are special enchantments found throughout the world that can be applied to your weapons. Each Affinity imbues a weapon with a distinct elemental damage type or status effect (e.g., searing flames, chilling frost, corrosive poison). Mixing and matching Affinities with different weapon types allows for deep combat customization.; How does the 'Momentum' system in Of Ash and Steel reward aggressive play?
Successfully chaining attacks, dodges, and parries builds 'Momentum.' At higher Momentum levels, attack speed and critical hit chance increase. However, taking damage or failing to execute these actions resets Momentum, pushing players to master the flow of combat to maximize their damage output.; Explain the significance of 'Runic Weaving' during boss fights.
Runic Weaving allows players to interrupt specific boss attack patterns by inputting a sequence of button prompts during a brief window. Successful Runic Weaving can stagger the boss, expose weak points, or even grant a temporary debuff to the enemy, providing crucial openings for damage.; What is the 'Sanity' mechanic and how does it influence the player's perception of the world?
The Sanity meter depletes when exposed to certain eldritch horrors or witnessing disturbing events. As Sanity lowers, visual and auditory hallucinations occur, and enemies may gain new, unpredictable attack patterns. Maintaining a higher Sanity offers a clearer, more stable combat experience.; How do 'Covenant Blessings' affect your journey and character development?
Upon defeating certain significant foes, players can choose to align with a 'Covenant.' Each Covenant offers a unique set of persistent passive bonuses and active abilities that can be swapped at specific safe zones. Choosing the right Covenant for your playstyle is vital for overcoming specific environmental hazards or enemy types.; Can you describe the 'Temporal Echo' mechanic and its application in puzzle-solving or exploration?
Certain areas contain 'Temporal Echoes' – ghostly replays of past events. Interacting with these echoes can reveal hidden paths, provide clues to puzzles, or even manifest spectral platforms or obstacles that the player can then interact with in the present.; What are 'Resonance Strikes' and how do they synergize with companion AI?
Resonance Strikes are powerful combo finishers that trigger when a player lands a critical hit after their AI companion has applied a specific debuff. Successfully executing a Resonance Strike unleashes a devastating dual attack, encouraging strategic use of companion abilities and coordinated combat.; How does the 'Scarred Resolve' system impact healing and recovery?
Instead of traditional health potions, players manage 'Scarred Resolve.' Taking damage inflicts 'Scars' which reduce maximum health. Specific actions, like performing perfect parries or defeating enemies without taking damage, can heal these Scars and restore maximum health, incentivizing mastery of defensive mechanics.
