Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ Success Sparks Trilogy Ambitions

Dynasty Warriors: Origins could become a trilogy

Dynasty Warriors: Origins has emerged as one of the most successful and well-received entries in the series in years, revitalizing the brand both commercially and creatively. Released in January 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the game reimagines the early chapters of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms with a stronger narrative focus, refined combat systems, and a more deliberate approach to large-scale warfare. The result has been robust sales and renewed interest from a large community.

The positive reception has had a direct impact on how Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force are thinking about the future of the project. According to producer Tomohiko Sho, the team initially planned Dynasty Warriors: Origins as the first half of a two-game storyline that would span the Three Kingdoms era up to the Battle of Wuzhang Plains. However, as development progressed, it became clear that Origins devoted far more depth and detail to its chosen period than originally anticipated.

A story with plenty of potential for more entries

Dynasty Warriors: Origins primarily covers events up to the Battle of Chi Bi (Red Cliffs), one of the most significant turning points in Chinese history. Sho has explained that maintaining the same level of storytelling, character development, and gameplay density in a single sequel would make it extremely difficult to cover the remainder of the historical timeline without rushing or cutting key moments. This realization prompted internal discussions about expanding the plan from a duology into a potential trilogy.

"The scale and density of Origins changed our thinking," Sho noted in recent interviews. "If we want to preserve the same quality and narrative focus, dividing the continuation into two additional games makes much more sense." In other words, the success of the first title has effectively earned the series more room to breathe.

In the short term, Koei Tecmo is already extending the life of Dynasty Warriors: Origins with post-launch content. The upcoming Visions of Four Heroes DLC, scheduled for release in January 2026, will introduce new playable storylines and further expand the game’s interpretation of the Three Kingdoms. A new platform release is also on the horizon, broadening the game’s potential audience even further.

While no official confirmation has been made regarding a full trilogy, the producer's comments suggest that Omega Force is actively planning for a longer-term narrative arc, pending continued commercial performance. If approved, a trilogy would represent one of the most ambitious storytelling efforts in Dynasty Warriors history, allowing the franchise to explore its historical source material with unprecedented depth.

For now, Dynasty Warriors: Origins stands as both a successful reboot and a foundation for what could become a multi-game saga shaped as much by player reception as by creative intent.
