Elden Ring Nightreign will transport players to a new version of the Lands Between, a mist-wrapped land riddled with echoes of the past. As a Nightfarer, you will share a battleground with up to two other players and cooperate with them to survive and defeat challenging bosses. The upcoming game offers a new type of experience that is quite different from Elden Ring, but it's also much more than it seems at first glance.
In a recent interview with IGN, game director Junya Ishizaki revealed plenty of new details about the story in Elden Ring Nightreign.
“Nightreign shares essentially the base setting and the world of Elden Ring, but it's played out on a different stage so to speak. So there's this concept called the Night Lord, which is a sort of abstract phenomenon or calamity that has befallen The Lands Between in this alternate timeline, and much like a real-life calamity, it's something that it's not done by design or intention – it's just something that has occurred naturally and it's befallen the lands between and it needed some sort of opposition. It needs something to oppose it, and that opposition comes in the form of the Nightfarers, who are these warriors who are entrusted with the fate of opposing and defeating the Nightlord and putting a stop to this terrible calamity.”
Rather than exclusively offering a repetitive multiplayer experience, Elden Ring Nightreign also expands the lore of the franchise. Each of the eight different Nightfarers you can choose in the game has its own story. FromSoftware has introduced a Remembrance system that allows players to uncover their stories as they play the game.
In Elden Ring Nightreign, each Nightfarer has unique abilities, allowing players to develop a different playstyle. Also, they have unique backgrounds and motivations, and you will be able to unlock them as you play the game. Remembrances can mainly be unlocked between fights, and they take multiple shapes. They range from journal entries to flashbacks where you can interact with a variety of characters and unlock exclusive objectives for your Nightfarer. These quests are individual and can even imply unique boss fights. Completing them will allow you to progress in the story and discover more details about the game's setting. The Remembrances system serves as a cohesive tool that adds meaning to the whole experience, which is awesome for a game like Elden Ring Nightreign, which features roguelike mechanics. The objectives are completely different from one character to another, but they contribute to expanding the world of Elden Ring, adding depth to its lore.
Elden Ring: Nightreign will be available later this month for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It promises to be like a breath of fresh air in one of the most popular franchises of all time.
