Borderlands 4 Packs 30,000 Million Guns — Seriously

Borderlands 4 promises 30,000 million guns — Because why not?

Gearbox Software is once again pushing the limits of absurdity and ambition in the upcoming Borderlands 4. In a recent interview on the Epic Games Store, studio co-founder Randy Pitchford and art director Adam May revealed that the game will feature a jaw-dropping 30 billion unique weapon variations. That’s not a typo. Billion, with a "B." 30,000 million unique weapon variations for players to discover inthe upcoming looter shooter.

Many more than 87 bazillion guns

This monumental figure is made possible by a supercharged procedural generation system that blends together eight different weapon manufacturers. Fan favorites like Jakobs, Maliwan, Torgue, Vladof, and Tediore return, joined by newcomers such as Order, Ripper, and Daedalus. Players can expect everything from pistols and SMGs to rocket launchers and elemental energy cannons, each with countless possible attachments, firing modes, and status effects. The biggest innovation this time around is the freedom to mix and match components across brands. You could, for example, bolt a Daedalus underbarrel attachment onto a Maliwan shotgun, creating a Franken-gun that's part sci-fi plasma blaster and part old-school boomstick. This feature alone exponentially increases the variety and the chaos that players will encounter.

To wrangle this mind-melting arsenal into something coherent, principal artist Jimmy Barnett developed what the team calls the "wall of guns." Built in Unreal Engine, it’s a massive visual catalog mapping every possible part combination, ensuring that even the wildest mashups remain functional, balanced, and true to Borderlands`' over-the-top style. While the numbers are outrageous, Pitchford insists there's a method behind the madness. The loot system is designed so that every weapon doesn't just look different; it behaves differently. From unique recoil patterns to creative reload animations, the goal is for each gun to feel like a distinct discovery, not just a reskin with a bigger damage number.

For context, the first Borderlands boasted a then-impressive 17 million guns. Borderlands 3 pushed that to a billion. Now, Borderlands 4 is multiplying that by thirty. It’s a leap that feels ridiculous in the best possible way, which seems like a fitting evolution for a franchise that has always thrived on turning excess into entertainment.

Players won't have to wait long to dive into this ballistic buffet. Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on October 3. And when it does, expect the gun you're holding to be unlike anything anyone else has found… until you toss it aside five minutes later for something even stranger.
