Final Fantasy Resonance: A classic FF adventure rebuilt in HD-2D

Final Fantasy goes HD-2D: What to know about Resonance

HD-2D is having a moment. Square Enix’s mix of pixel-art characters, 3D environments and modern lighting first turned heads with Octopath Traveler in 2018. Since then the style has spread fast, with Triangle Strategy, the Live A Live remake and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake all winning over fans.

The style works especially well for older games. Classic RPGs were built around sprites, so HD-2D can keep the look players remember while adding depth, lighting and camera work that 90s hardware could only dream of. The result looks the way old games look in your memory, not how they actually looked.

What is Final Fantasy Resonance?

Final Fantasy Resonance is the first Final Fantasy game in the HD-2D style. It’s based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game. Square Enix says it isn’t a straight port, though. The game has been refined and largely rebuilt as a full console RPG. Expect a classic tale of crystals, with airships, espers, moogles and chocobos all part of the story.

If you’ve played Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you’ll have a rough idea of the vibe: a familiar adventure retold with fresh visuals. The difference is that Resonance leans harder into dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models to make big moments feel more dramatic.

Battles are turn-based, with a modern twist. Hit an enemy’s weakness and you’ll stagger it, breaking its defences and earning extra turns. That opens the door to Resonance attacks, the game’s powerful finishing moves.

Then there are Visions. These are echoes of famous Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside your party with their own skills and abilities. Confirmed Visions include Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. Sephiroth is in the game too, and if you track him down and beat him, you’ll unlock a special reward.

A free demo is out now on every platform, and your save carries over to the full game. Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026, on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
