Alone in the Dark trilogy goes free on GOG for a short time only

GOG is currently running a limited-time bundled game giveaway, and fans of classic survival horror may want to take notice. The store is offering a free package titled the Alone in the Dark Trilogy, which also includes the short spin-off adventure Jack in the Dark.

All three main Alone in the Dark titles are part of GOG’s Preservation Program, an initiative aimed at keeping classic games playable on modern systems long after official developer support has ended. Although the games originally launched in 1992, 1993, and 1995, they have been updated to run smoothly on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.

The first game in the series places players inside a mansion filled with occult themes and heavy Lovecraftian inspiration. Featuring two playable characters, the interconnected rooms and cinematic presentation helped establish design principles that would later define the survival horror genre.

The second entry, Alone in the Dark 2, shifts toward a more action-oriented approach. Firearms take on a larger role, enemy encounters are more frequent, and combat becomes more prominent. Despite this change in focus, exploration and puzzle-solving remain essential elements of the experience.

The third game, Alone in the Dark 3, moves the setting to the Mojave Desert. Many mechanics are streamlined, and the gameplay leans further into action, with almost any object usable as a weapon. Even so, it preserves the series’ fixed-camera angles and unsettling atmosphere.

Players looking for a more modern take on the franchise can also check out the 2024 reboot, which offers updated visuals and refined gameplay while drawing inspiration from the originals.
